Oh, ok. I am unfamiliar with the Navy. I know he is not a corporal. But that’s the only e-4 I know of, so I translated Navy to Army. I just don’t speak Navy and I have to go to familiar ground as I don’t have my sea legs.
So Petty officer is a Rank, a Rating is your job. So a gunners mate is a rate?
Many Navy personnel work in Afghanistan. One is a very close family member of mine.

Pentagon Officials Confirm Sailors Death

WASHINGTON, July 29, 2010 Defense Department officials today announced the death of a sailor who previously was listed as duty status whereabouts unknown while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jarod Newlove, 25, of Renton, Wash., died of wounds suffered from an incident in Afghanistans Logar province July 23. Coalition forces recovered his body yesterday after an extensive search, officials said. He was assigned to Navy Reserve Force Command. The July 23 incident remains under investigation, officials said.
