With the GOP primary just a month away, U.S. Sen. John McCain is pulling further away from rival J.D. Hayworth, and Rasmussen Reports is no longer listing the incumbent senator as vulnerable to an upset from his conservative challenger.
A Rasmussen Reports poll released on July 26 showed McCain with a 54-34 lead over Hayworth. Rasmussen conducted the automated push-button telephone poll of 595 likely Republican primary voters on July 21.
Seven percent of respondents said they would vote for another candiate, and 6 percent said they were unsure who they would cast their ballots for in the Aug. 24 primary.
McCains leads have varied wildly depending on the poll, with Rasmussen giving him an 11-percent lead in January and the Behavior Research Center showing him up by a whopping 45 points in mid-July. But every poll shows the four-term senator pulling away from his conservative challenger.
While many of Rasmussens previous polls described McCain as potentially vulnerable because his support consistently hovered around 50 percent, usually a bad sign for an incumbent. Rasmussen noted that McCains approval numbers were similar to those of U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, who lost in Pennsylvanias Democratic primary.
But unlike Specters challenger, U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, Rasmussen said Hayworth is not gaining any ground on his opponent.
That comparison no longer works, Rasmussen wrote of the Hayworth-Specter comparison. In the Arizona match-up, Hayworth is falling further behind in the final month before the primary.

Arizona is more conservative now than it has ever been.
I don’t think that it is the amount of campaigning that Sarah has done for McCain that matters, but that it is the recognition of her name that influences voters the most.
Thanks Sarah. You were supposed to be above the machine....above the RINO politics. But, you have single-handedly helped McAmnesty back into the Senate.
One or two comments? Here's a reminder: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20001289-503544.html
Exactly. That's why I always laugh at the "RINO" tag. It's an oxymoron. "Republican" is just a name for a bunch of people who are organized to win elections and govern, not some actual political philosophy. That they tend to be more conservative than the rival political organization is purely coincidental.
Then I hope they prefer Mexico lite because that’s exactly what they are going to get.
Then why are so many supportive of SB1070?
Single-handedly? Looks like she has had plenty of help from both elected officials and apathetic voters. No one has stopped conservatives from donating to Hayworth. Why can he not match McCain in contributions?
“does this stink of more Soros money?”
And the winner is...
Now you know why I hate this f__king state.
I hope there’s a BIG God damn civil war in Mexico, and that it spills over the border into AZ, because I honestly think that before the rest of Arizona finally wakes the hell up and sees what these amnesty-pushing RINO f__ks have done to us, a lot of people are going to have to *die* thanks to our open borders.
I frankly wouldn’t care if this entire worthless s__thole state got wiped off the map. There’s not one f__king person here — MYSELF INCLUDED — who deserves to be called an American. If we couldn’t pull our s__t together enough to defeat John McF__kingCain, there’s not a God damn *shred* of hope for the rest of the country.
I don’t know who we think we’re kidding. McStain’s oncoming success seems to indicate to me that this entire thing is going to crash and burn in November, and the God damn Democrats are going to rub it right in our faces for the next twelve years — or three years or however long it takes to turn us into a People’s Republic.
Tea Party? Neutered. Sarah Palin? Foot in her mouth up to the God damn knee. Conservatism? Dead as dogs__t. Voters? Too motherf__king busy watching American Idol.
Borders? F__ked. Sanity? F__ked. Arizona? F__ked.
America? Epic, apocalyptic FAILURE, coming in 2011.
