International Energy Agency calculations based on preliminary data show that China has now overtaken the United States to become the worlds largest energy user. Chinas rise to the top ranking was faster than expected as it was much less affected by the global financial crisis than the United States.
For those who have been following energy consumption trends closely, this does not come as a surprise. What is more important is the phenomenal growth in demand that has taken place in China over the last decade; also prospects for future growth still remain incredibly strong. Since 2000, Chinas energy demand has doubled, yet on a per capita basis it is still only around one-third of the OECD average. Prospects for further growth are very strong considering the countrys low per-capita consumption level and the fact that China is the most populous nation on the planet, with more than 1.3 billion people.
Chinas demand would be even higher still if the government had not made such progress in reducing the energy intensity (the energy input per dollar of output) of its economy. It has also very quickly become one of the worlds leaders in renewable energy, particularly wind power and solar energy, and paved the way for a big expansion of nuclear power.
The worldwide implications of these new trends will be assessed in the upcoming World Energy Outlook 2010 to be released on November 9, 2010.
Al Gore, Al Gore! What will you do?!?
When factories relocate, so do the power supplies needed to run them.
ping
Yup. Actual manufacturing requires power.
Good, now maybe the world will get off our back.

Not really. The Global Warmist Religion plan always called for raping the US economy, but placing essentially NO RESTRICTIONS AT ALL!!! on China, as they are a “developing” economy!
India got a free pass, too, for the same reason.
One of the reasons for the collapse of talks in Copenhagen is China’s steadfast refusal to enter into ANY binding emmisions limit.
Remember — it’s not really about the environment at all, it’s about iron-fisted CONTROL of the Evil Satan US.
emmisions = emissions
And so it begins. America is in decline...and has been for 10 years according to that chart.
BS! China has already publically denied this as Western propganda....../s
China recently passed the US, as purchaser of the most cars, by unit count.
Maybe we should cap their trade.
China: The GDP for 2009 was $4.9 Trillion
US: 2009 GDP United States 14,256,275 Trillion
3 times the energy for 1/3 the GDP!
Maybe China is left alone because they would sooner shoot the hippies in their streets than jeopardize the development of their economy.
Yes, and 3 times the population.
