Washington/Madrid - US First Lady Michelle Obama and one of her two daughters will take a summer break in Spain, a White House source said Monday.
Mother and daughter would come to the southern holiday resort of Marbella on a "private visit in the company of old friends," the source told the German Press Agency dpa.
US President Barack Obama will not accompany his wife, the source said.
Spanish media reports said Michelle Obama and her younger daughter Sasha, 9, would be on Spain's Costa del Sol between August 4 and 8.
There had been speculation that Barack Obama might also come to Spain to celebrate his 49th birthday on August 4.
Michelle Obama has reserved about 30 rooms for herself and her daughter, their friends and bodyguards at a five-star hotel in Benahavis near Marbella, hotel sources said.
The US first lady did not make any special requests, hotel owner Ricardo Arranz said, explaining that the hotel would function normally during her stay.
Earlier on Monday, sources at the Zarzuela royal palace declined to say whether King Juan Carlos would meet Michelle Obama, stressing that there was no official confirmation of the first lady's visit to Spain.
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's government had been disappointed in its hopes of hosting Barack Obama when the US president cancelled his participation in a European Union-US summit that had been scheduled during the Spanish EU presidency in the first half of 2010. He hee. I just have to wonder, are they so dense that thery can’t see these comparisons coming? Vacations in Hawaii, the Hamptons, Martha’s Vinyard, they were going to Indonesia and now Spain? With all the time on the golf course as well? Are they really this dense to the image they are portraying?
...and that right there is the key to who's paying for the trip!
I'm curious... This isn't a state visit. Do we foot the bill anyway? Maybe Secret Service protection comes for free, but is everything on the taxpayer's dime? The President gets paid a nominal salary, and there are a lot of perks when he's acting as Head of State, but is EVERY whim covered?
Imagine the outcry if Barbara had done this.

FYI: Costa Del Sol is probably the least interesting part of Spain.
It is most likely where all the major foreign investment is so I suspect she’s going to come back with a wheelbarow full of cash.
Maybe she can bring back a box of those pretty Spanish fans to distribute to the citizens of DC.

Like I said, a takeover of a 5-star resort for a jetload of freeloaders masquerading as a taxpayer funded “official visit”. These people have zero scruples.
It doesn’t say anything positive about the state of their marriage.

Can you believe it??? How many days have they been on vacation? The only bright spot is that they seem to understand that this is their last chance - they are on a speeding (Gravy) train that will summarily end after Nov. 2012!!

There’s Bill and Bernedette; the Rev Jerry; Tony Rezco; Mama Robinson; maybe Blago, he’s got some time before he reports to jail, maybe buddy Valerie Jarrett , probably alot more community pimps on the streets of Chitown, maybe her fashion designer friend.
She’s got 30 rooms. I don’t think that the SS detail hotbunks, so that’s probably six rooms; hers makes it seven; so we got 23 more to account for. Must have one to convert her nappy hair to a coif daily; a makeup specialist; a few more social secretaries and wardrobe coordinators; maybe a few buyers to pick up some more boob belts. The pilot, co-pilot, attendees; the limo drivers. Maybe a private chef from Chicago.

She's only twelve and, even though she looks older at 5'9", I can't believe her parents allow her to date.
