Washington/Madrid - US First Lady Michelle Obama and one of her two daughters will take a summer break in Spain, a White House source said Monday.
Mother and daughter would come to the southern holiday resort of Marbella on a "private visit in the company of old friends," the source told the German Press Agency dpa.
US President Barack Obama will not accompany his wife, the source said.
Spanish media reports said Michelle Obama and her younger daughter Sasha, 9, would be on Spain's Costa del Sol between August 4 and 8.
There had been speculation that Barack Obama might also come to Spain to celebrate his 49th birthday on August 4.
Michelle Obama has reserved about 30 rooms for herself and her daughter, their friends and bodyguards at a five-star hotel in Benahavis near Marbella, hotel sources said.
The US first lady did not make any special requests, hotel owner Ricardo Arranz said, explaining that the hotel would function normally during her stay.
Earlier on Monday, sources at the Zarzuela royal palace declined to say whether King Juan Carlos would meet Michelle Obama, stressing that there was no official confirmation of the first lady's visit to Spain.
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's government had been disappointed in its hopes of hosting Barack Obama when the US president cancelled his participation in a European Union-US summit that had been scheduled during the Spanish EU presidency in the first half of 2010. The summit was subsequently called off. Copyright DPA

"Bill, and Bernedette, would you like cavier, or lobster? How about both??"
Excuse me, thats not Spain, its Al-Andalus.
One of my favorite countries outside the U.S., and the Obama family will be poisoning it with their presence. Ugh! Isn’t there anything they touch that doesn’t turn into krap?
What’s the vacation count up to now? Eleven?
The Spanish economy needs a boost..
Liposuction on the botwinks?
Geez..and to think we used to compare Hillary to Evita..
I accept I do not like this president, and tend to be more hypercritical of his activities. BUT! I a time of great financial difficulty for the US, why are they going on such an extravagant vacation... OUTSIDE OF THE US!
Gee...Who will take care of the garden?
And just how many vacations does this make now?
Spending some of that unspent part of his $750 million campaign contributions.
What percentage of that were foreign contributions, and is there any investigation on that, or is Holder there to stop it?
Damn freeloaders. I bet mama Robinson and Malika’s boyfriend are going along for the ride.
What? Not Ibiza?
And guess who's going to paying for this royal treatment.
Michelle is leaving her husband on his birthday? Isn’t that odd? Yes, I would think 30 rooms is a little excessive, especially when it’s seems she’s not celebrating her husband’s birthday with him. However, as long as she’s paying for the rooms, she can do what she wants.
Well, they can. The rest of us can visit the soiled Gulf.
When are these people NOT on vacation..?
Every time I turn around, it’s a glitzy vacation or at least SOME type of vacation.
What if we had a war or some kind of catastrophe...?
It’s almost as if they fear that their two year taxpayer paid party will come to a sudden end.
Looks like this leaves Barry Dunham alone to go to Chicago gay club!!! Birthday boy celebrates!!!
Sorry for cross posting but this thread may be more appropriate...
I know were all supposed to shrug our shoulders and say ehh... whatever but 30 rooms at a 5-star hotel for a stay that included old friends really burns my @ss. Im trying to figure out who to call to ask who is paying for that (of course that will be asked tongue planted firmly in cheek).
Any idea if the WH switchboard would route my call (other than the Secret Service)? Should I call my joke of a Rep (Joe Courtney)?
