U.S. Sen. John Kerry, the owner of a new, super-luxe 76-foot yacht, is not dodging a six-figure Massachusetts tax bill by docking the Isabel in Rhode Island and will pony up to the state if any taxes are owed, a spokesman for the alleged tax-skipping skipper said.
And it appears the senior senator may be on the hook for more than $500,000 in state and local taxes because Kerry tied his toney tub up in Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket waters within six months of buying her.

If he pays up it will only be because he got busted. If he's so willing to be compliant now why didn't he contact the appropriate authorities earlier and determine his obligations?
Liberals: taxes are for the little people.

I gotta tell ya, I’m inspired by his example!!! I’ll pay any taxes I owe too and if I forget I’m sure I’ll be reminded with a threatening letter.

Exactly right. Before Kerry latched on to the BIG Mama Teat he was sleeping in his car.

Liberals think they can BS their way out of anything.

In the early 1990’s there was a luxury tax on yachts that about killed the industry.
Did Kerry vote for it?
Was he for it, before he was against it?
No one left in the US to build his play toy?

First is there any doubt that Kerry would not have ponied up if his tax hypocrisy hadn’t been exposed? Second, note his parsed response...”IF” any taxes are owed. I’m sure his tax people are looking for every loophole.

They are probably all union:)
“As I said yesterday, the Isabel is based in Newport at the Newport Shipyard for longterm maintenance, upkeep and charter purposes, not tax reasons”
I’d be pissed if I was a MA worker and my senator basically said I wasn’t good enough.

also sailed into Edgartown on Marthas Vineyard, according to sources. Kerry was seen coming ashore off the Isabel on the town dock July 16 as he made his way to an event at the Harborview Hotel . Under law, if a boat owner berths the vessel in Massachusetts waters within six months of purchasing the boat, theres a presumption of use, and the owner must fork over the 6.25 percent sales tax to the commonwealth. Local excise taxes also are due.
Oops.

Half a mill is more than enough to give Lurch a long face.
And Ta-ray-zaaa is going to be plenty upset, too.

The story changed since yesterday. Yesterday they were saying Kerry didn't owe the money as what he did to avoid the tax was perfectly legal by keeping the boat in Rhode Island. As a Democrat he's entitled to not pay taxes on fancy stuff anyhow. Right? ;-)
However, the fact that he had indeed taken the boat to Edgartown and anchored it there for however a brief moment in time, puts him on the hook for the MASS tax as their law says if it is birthed anywhere in MASS within 6mos of purchase they assume the boat will be used/kept in state and therefore subject to the tax.
The question now is whether Kerry will whine about paying the half-mil in taxes or suck it up and plunk it down knowing that any whining on his part will hurt the Democrat Party.

The only convenience is not having to pay taxes. He spends his summers on Nantucket. There is no good reason why he can’t keep his boat there. Nantucket boat basin holds boats a whole lot bigger than Kerry’s.

"couldn't find an American builder"
One of the finest yacht builders in America is the Hinckley Company right there in good old Maine.
Kerry wanted the boat built cheap.

Offshore tax havens too. Here in Annapolis you see a lot of the big boys stopping over on their way to winter in the Caribbean.I have seen flags for Bermuda, Panama, and Liberia among others.
