Charles Rangel at Fridays news conference.
In his first news conference since learning his fellow lawmakers would put up him on trial for ethics violations, Representative Charles B. Rangel urged his constituents and the press to be patient, saying he would not address the specifics of the charges against him until the proceedings begin next week.
But Mr. Rangel, who snapped at reporters in Washington on Thursday, appeared determined to strike a softer tone at Fridays appearance, even offering a public apology to one reporter, Luke Russert, whose question on Thursday about whether the charges would cost the congressman his job Mr. Rangel dismissed as dumb.

He’s HAD 40 years...he’s had enough TIME....all he needs now, is TIME IN THE SLAMMER!
More time - you mean like until after the elections? Its been several election cycles since this guy’s tax evasions were discovered, hasn’t it?
vaudine
30 years without parole.
Let him just go home to Harlem and we call it even. Second Division Vets get one big pass with me. But sin no more Charlie, this is it, I really mean it.
“offering a public apology to one reporter,”
He knows it’s finally over. He knows he’s toast, and wants to try and keep the press somewhat quieter.
Benedict Arnold may have saved the Revolution at Saratoga and so what? Whatever good Rangel accomplished for the United States in the 2nd ID has been wiped out by decades of fraud and abuse in Congress.
Trial and conviction are what he deserves.
He as burned up 10 shredding machines and crushed 5 hard drives,
Not Good Enough: He is a PUBLIC SERVANT that Willfully and Knowingly abused his Office for Profit or Gain,
Complete Civil Asset Forfeiture and Life in Prison
This should be the Standard FOR ALL PUBLIC SERVANTS
It is one thing to fight for freedom and then start passing laws that deny it to many. One cancels out the other. If they can send you or me to prison for tax evasion then the same law should apply to them.
How 'bout triple time if your responsibilities include writing and voting on tax law?
Did you get everything you deserve? I didn't either, thank goodness, but I got some stuff I didn't deserve. I did nothing to deserve getting bald. Where is the justice?
I will say you should not go to prison too. You might want to keep paying your taxes, until you see have much influence my opinion has for Charlie.
Charlie, you’re a crook; in other words, a good Demonrat.
He wants time, does he? I’m quite certain there is plenty of room for him at the Grey Bar Hotel to get it.
Nice idea.
Deserve? You're right. I should have said. "Trial and conviction are what he has earned."
One thing is for sure: we will get more and more of whatever behavior we are willing to tolerate from our "leadership."
I do (reluctantly). Charlie should do the same.
