Charlie's fading friends
NY Post ^ | July 24, 2010 | Editorial

Just one day after learning that he will face a House Ethics Committee trial on multiple ethics allegations, it looks like Rep. Charlie Rangel is starting to turn toxic for fellow Democrats.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer -- who've been among Rangel's staunchest defenders during the committee's two-year probe -- issued terse statements conspicuously lacking in political support.

"The independent, bipartisan Ethics Committee is moving forward," said Pelosi through a spokesman.

Added Hoyer -- as he dodged questions about the scandal's impact on congressional elections: "The ethics process is working."

And two of New York's leading Democrats suddenly suggested that they may find themselves too busy to attend Rangel's Aug. 11 birthday bash, for which tickets cost between $1,000 and $25,000.

Spokesmen for both Gov. Paterson and the man who wants to succeed him, Andrew Cuomo, said their schedules have not been planned "that far in advance."

Which suggests the Grand Ballroom at the Plaza may well end up somewhat emptier than Rangel is hoping.

Not that Charlie is totally without friends in his own party by any means.

If Nancy Pelosi said it, it’s pretty sure it’s not true. While conducting the Kabuki dance in public, in private the panel is telling Charlie that it’s engineering a cushy deal to ease him out and not to worry, his successor will be just as radical as he was.

He is becoming a liability, and as such, has failed them for the last time. The current Democratic Party is becoming more and more like the enemy organization from the old James Bond movies, where minions who failed were often subjected to the violence of their superiors.

Added Hoyer . . . "The ethics process is working."

Hoyer had to be snickering to himself when he put this bald-faced lie out for the press.

If the 'ethics process' is working, why are Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, Frank, and at least 40 others STILL seated?

Or like the way various leaders were rehabbed or unhabbed in Russian communist history, depending on the prevailing political winds. Charlie is getting unhabbed, bigtime, though he may privately get a very nice retirement.

It sounds as if a new czar position is about to open up in obama’s hall of criminals kingdom, uh, administration.

How old is the oldest czar? I think Charlie is too much of a geezer for that. If he comes across as more senile than Joe Biden, that just won’t do for Bummer’s already laughable public image.

It will be fun if Charlie decides not to go quietly. Like Clinton after impeachment, I think that bat fastard knows where a lot of bodies are buried and if they push him too hard, he just might exhume a few.

My prediction: Charlie’ll hold the threat of resignation over the ‘Rats’ heads. The ‘Rats will do a deal rather than leave the House seat vacant. The ‘Rats won’t be able to fill it immediately if Rangel resigns because Gov. Paterson is still screwing NY-29 out of a special election. Paterson can’t very well allow Charlie’s district to hold a special election while he’s making NY-29 wait ‘til November.

Not in my opinion, they will find some way to keep this out of the front pages till after November elections. I heard something about another panel which will now examine the results of the ethics committee and decide what to do... called further delay. The kicker is will he be censured or removed after already being reelected! The last thing the dems and the media want is any drawn out television drama of one of the dem’s stars right before the election which would tie together for the public to see all the legal and ethical challenges of the dems and their appointments beginning with Turbo Tax Tim.

He may quietly decide to pack it in after the new Congress is sworn in because if the GOP takes over, which I pray for, he will be relegated to some back water minority committee seating. Ironically, he is being challenged in the dem primary by Alan C. Powell JR, the son of the guy he replaced in office years ago.

BTW, if they have a special election next year, I believe Frank Lucas is out of prison and available to run!

Meanwhile, those who are moving away are primarily those who may align them selves with Clintoon if she decides to run against Ears.

Charlie Rangel is 80 years old. Time to retire and enjoy your ill gotten gain.

I like how these rotten smelly old hacks just can’t let go and give some young blood a chance. They are all ego and can’t give up all the arse kissing they get in DC
