Mike Ditka on a lockout: "I just can't believe anybody is that stupid"
Posted by Michael David Smith
July 23, 2010 9:33 AM ET

Mike Ditka understands the labor side of things as a longtime NFL tight end, and he understands the management side of things as a former head coach. And he says he can't fathom how labor and management can't reach a deal to make sure there's football in 2011 and beyond.

"I hear that [lockout] talk and I just can't believe anybody is that stupid," Ditka said Thursday on ESPN Radio in Chicago. "If the owners or the players are that stupid that they are going to shoot this golden goose . . . I mean it's laying golden eggs. It's a multibillion dollar business. It's the most popular sport in this country, don't kill it."

Ditka, who was the Bears' head coach during the players' strikes of 1982 and 1987, says he thinks the union and the owners just need to be willing to find some common ground.

"I think right now you have power struggles," Ditka said. "They say, 'Well, we're not going to give in to them,' and 'We're not going to give in to them.' Timeout. Somewhere along the way you come to a happy medium. You get to the middle and there's a little give and take on both sides. For the good of the game . . . what happened to that statement? For the good of the game we continue to play, everybody continues to prosper, nobody gets cheated out of anything."

One of the reasons for the rancor between the players and the owners is that they can't necessarily agree about what constitutes "the good of the game."

Obviously the Cowboys are going back to the Super Bowl this year. Is this a ploy to keep them out?

NFL is so pro-Obama. I hope they strike and disappear.

I hope they all go broke and have to start from the ground up with players wearing leather helmets, playing both ways and making two hundred clams a game.

I’m picking the Colts over the Vikings.

You may get a bit of disagreement on that.

The NFLPA head is an Obamaite. Fear of what he would do is one of the reasons the NFL wouldn’t let Moderate-Centrist Race Healer Rush Limbaugh own a team, and he’ll also probably lead the NFL into a lockout.

The players union thinks Obama will force the teams to give the players an ownership stake. Ala GM/Chrysler

Oh, and America's team will win the last Super Bowl before the lockout and eventual end of the earth in 2012. Wise men still follow the Star.

Fortunately, most of the players will can go back to selling cocaine, making rap music, or robbing liquor stores to get them through the rough times ahead.

Obviously the Cowboys are going back to the Super Bowl this year.

Get real. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers are the most talented, deepest team in the league with the best wide receivers. And an upcoming all-pro tight end in Jermichael Finley

Is Favre gonna kick your team’s butts twice again, or only once?

I disagree, there aren't enough Tennessee graduates to go around for this to happen.

Yeah, like the baseball strike was to keep Montreal from winning the World Series after Toronto took it twice.

Let the NFL lock out the players. It’ll do the same thing as the NHL’s strike/lockout and alienate a large care of fans like me. I haven’t even looked at buying a ticket since that debacle.

There sure won’t be much of a “happy medium” or “give and take” on that one. ;^)
