An anti-Semitic inscription was engraved on the grave of Irena Sendler, a Polish woman who saved 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto, public Polish television TVP announced Wednesday.
According to television images, the words "Jews out" were sprayed on the grave in a Warsaw cemetery.
A spokesman for the police said an investigation had been launched to try to identify the perpetrator.
Sendler died in May 2008 at the age of 98. Before World War II, she helped poor Jewish families in Warsaw, where she worked as a social worker.
In autumn 1940, she took considerable risks to bring food, clothing and medicine to the inhabitants of the ghetto.
In 1942, she was smuggled children out of the ghetto to Catholic institutions and convents. The children were hidden in suitcases carried by firefighters or garbage bins or hidden under the coats of people entitled to enter the ghetto.
During WWII, Irena, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.
She had an ulterior motive .
She KNEW what the Nazis plans were for the Jews, (being German).
Irena smuggled infants out in the bottom of her tool box she carried, and she also carried in the back of her truck a Burlap sack, (for larger kids).
She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto.
The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the kids/infants noises..
During her time and course of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.
She was caught, and the Nazis broke both her legs and arms and beat her severely.
Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard.
After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it, and reunited the family.
Most, of course, had been gassed.
Those kids she helped were placed into foster family homes or adopted.
Last year Irena was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize .
She LOST.
Al Gore won for doing a slide show on Global Warming.
Probably just some members of the NAACP on vacation.
Thank you for posting that story, Irena Sendler is a true hero. Al Gore is a...
Irena Sendler lived a long life and when she was confined to a nursing home in her last days she was cared for by one of the (now grown) children whom she saved.
And she was a Catholic — so much for the intelligence of graffiti racists.
this is who the masseuse-grabbing huckster beat out for a Nobel prize.pathetic.
The thing is, there are hardly any Jews left in Poland, whatever Hitler didn’t kill, the Commies drove out the rest.
Wasn't getting the "Jews out" exactly what she was doing? I just don't get anitsemitism. I grew up Catholic in New York City and heard lots of antisemite remarks, though never from Catholic clerics and more often from non-Catholics than Catholics. But it never rubbed off on me in the least. I supposed mostly it was based on envy and jealousy.

Sometimes we just have to stop for a moment and weep because of the evil.
A true heroine indeed.
Not to be pedantic but... ‘sprayed on tomb’ in the title followed by ‘engraved on the grave’ in the story and then ‘sprayed on the grave’ later and then ‘ she was smuggled children’.
So much for copy editors.
Another little tidbit about Irena that few talk about:
In 1968, when the Communist authorities cracked down on Polish Jews, calling them Zionists and expelling some 20,000 from Poland, Mrs. Sendler announced she was ready to hide Jews again. For her statement, the authorities expelled her children from the Warsaw University.
I saw a short movie about this in the Righteous Gentile section of the Yad VaShem (Hand of G-d) Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem. I also put stones on Schindler’s grave in Jerusalem. It was extremely moving on both counts.
To its shame, Poland remains one of the most virulently anti-Semitic nations on Earth.
I'm sure she has garnered a much larger "prize" than the Nobel, which has become a joke.
Lech Kaczynski (RIP), tried to do all he could to change that.
Exactly.
Recent events in Al Gore’s life make this story even more sickening.
A very brief hiatus after World War II, and anti-Semitism is back in fashion.
