Consultants sell 'birth tourism' to expectant Chinese mothers

SHANGHAI — What can $1,475 buy you in modern China? Not a Tiffany diamond or a mini-sedan, say Robert Zhou and Daisy Chao. But for that price, they guarantee you something more lasting, with unquestioned future benefits: a U.S. passport and citizenship for your new baby.

Zhou and Chao, a husband and wife from Taiwan who now live in Shanghai, run one of China's oldest and most successful consultancies helping well-heeled expectant Chinese mothers travel to the United States to give birth.

The couple's service, outlined in a PowerPoint presentation, includes connecting the expectant mothers with one of three Chinese-owned "baby care centers" in California. For the $1,475 basic fee, Zhou and Chao will arrange for a three-month stay in a center — two months before the birth and a month after. A room with cable TV and a wireless Internet connection, plus three meals, starts at $35 a day. The doctors and staff all speak Chinese. There are shopping and sightseeing trips.

The mothers must pay their own airfare and are responsible for getting a U.S. visa, although Zhou and Chao will help them fill out the application form.

At a time when China is prospering and the common perception of America here is of an empire in economic decline, the proliferation of U.S. baby services shows that for many Chinese, a U.S. passport nevertheless remains a powerful lure. The United States is widely seen as more of a meritocracy than China, where getting into a good university or landing a high-paying job often depends on personal connections.

~snip~

There are no solid figures, but dozens of firms advertise "birth tourism" packages online, many of them based in Shanghai, and Zhao said the number has soared in the past five years.

We will not have this problem when it becomes apparent that our country is as crappy a place to live as the homelands of the illegals. This degrading of America is occurring at a frightening pace. Zero is making sure of that.

This is why the anchor baby loopphole MUST be closed 40 years ago or more. We are already overrun with millions of illegals from Mexico, we can't afford this. Since the politicians aren't going to do it, WE, the people who OWN this government lock, stock and barrel, are going to have to wrest control from the politicians and fix this ourselves. Neither the prostitu . . . er, politicians on the left, nor the prostitu . . . . uh, politicians on the right are EVER going to address this issue and FIX IT!! We will have to do it for them!!

If we close that loophole better make sure that American women are more willing to have children and more of them otherwise you’ll see American run into a fertility rate of less than 2.1. We are currently holding at 2.1 but once you drop below that say “Hello, declining population!”.

These are just tourists. They go home, but with a baby that is a natural born American citizen. This gives the baby options in later life, schooled in the US, even become president!

I’m OK with this as long as these newborn communist parasites grow up to join US labor unions and vote exclusively for democrats. /axelrod

Ummmmm, Jack?? We have been in a declining birth rate since the last baby boomer child emerged from the womb. Besides, what does that have to do with Chinese women coming here to deliver an anchor baby?? One thing is NOT the same as the other.

“Chuo said she and her husband like living in Taiwan and are not interested in migrating to the United States, except, perhaps, when they retire.”

And apply for SSI, Section 8 and MediCare. Got it dialed in.

Yes, of course it has. In 1960 the USA’s fertility rate was around 4.0. Women’s liberation from men and our rising wealth have caused us to abandon and forget about the importance of the next generation.

Right now the fertility rate is holding on at 2.1. It did drop below that for a little while when the economy collapsed a few years ago but it has bobbed back up to that 2.1 minimum replacement level again. All the Feds have to do is open the doors of immigration even wider.

Most Western(ized) countries have fertility rates below 2.1 like Japan (1.34) and Italy (1.41).

I forgot to mention that it is the illegal aliens and the legal immigrants that are having the children Americans don’t want or care to have. It’s too much hard work to raise children and costs too much money. Let a third worlder do it.

Should you be posting a “/sarc” after your posts??

I can’t tell what point you are trying to make. Why do we need to increase the birth rate??

Are you for closing the anchor baby loophole?

Are you sure your posts shouldn’t have a “/s” tag after them? Are you proposing that we should have a fertility rate that causes us to lose population? What is your ideal population number for the USA? Are you pro-euthanasia? Pro abortion?

My point is if we close the loophole on this anchor baby problem then our population will drop. How low you like to see it drop is what I am curious to know. Americans do not value children like they used to and as a result they are not having them.

Americans do not value children like they used to and as a result they are not having them.

It takes you a long time to make your point. I disagree that Americans don't value children and are not having them. Virtually every piece of legislation coming out of either Congress or a state legislature has something attached "for the children" as a means of getting Americans behind it. To say that we don't value children in this country is naive, at best.

The anchor baby loophole only provides babies - they are not a guarantee of more people who WANT to be Americans, just a guarantee that we will HAVE more people who can call themselves Americans. The two are not synonymous.

The future population of America needs to consider if there will be sufficient jobs available to support all of these people. At the current rate that jobs are being outsourced to other countries and with the current unfavorable business climate in America, we currently cannot provide jobs for all of the people that want them and are already here - legal or otherwise!! If we cannot provide useful, productive jobs for these people, they become either an unsustainable burden on those Americans who HAVE jobs, or they become beggers wandering the streets because the welfare safety net will be stretched too thin by those working Americans that they cannot afford them.

Americans having babies for the sake of having babies is a poor strategy. We need to ensure that the future of America can sustain all these babies when they grow up. That means, there have to be meaningful, productive jobs, abundant food, education and the like. Take a long look around you. The education industry is crumbling and deteriorating before our eyes; more and more farmers are being forced out of farming and those that are left are increasingly growing more food that is being raised for ethanol and biofuels than is going to anybody's belly. And, I've addressed the jobs issue.

Based on current trends and recent history, anchor babies, for the most part, are additional drains on the welfare safety net, NOT contributors to maintain it. So, IF we allow these anchor babies to continue to drain the diminishing resources we have, what value (other than they are a human life) do they offer America?? They aren't assets, they are just here.
