BP's Deepwater Oil Spill - Bubble, Bubble Oil and Trouble
The Oil Drum ^ | July20,2010 | Heading Out

Posted on 07/20/2010 3:33:52 PM PDT by Hojczyk

Update 2:30 pm EDT: Original leak on the pipe has been sealed, but there are two major leaks on the stack now. One is at the bottom of the new "cap" and the other is on both sides of the BOP just underneath the flex joint. Lots of hydrates above the leaks.

This must be an innacurate report. Obama’s stooge from the CG just said it was like an oil leak in a car, more of a drip. They would not lie.

Here are the current known problems with the Macondo blowout which is currently Shut In.

Shut In Well Pressure Anomaly
Pressure was and still is below the range that guarantees absolute Well Bore Integrity. BP/Obama assuming Reservoir Depletion with no proof. Pressure now reported at 6,834 and rising less then 1 psi per hour. Entire pressure log data set for the Shut In Test not released to public.

Leakage of Gas at the Well Head Base
Gas samples were collected. Tests were run. Results not made public. Presence of methane could mean possible casing breach.

Leakage of Oil at the Base of the New 3 Ram Stack
They have watched that extensively the past 48 hours. Claim it is not a concern as of now. Rate of leakage is slowly increasing. Large volume of hyrdates forming a sludge-like growth in numerous locations on the 3 Ram Stack.

Reports of Seeps within a Couple Hundred Meters of Well
They now have confirmed 5 leaks in and around the wellhead. Around the well head means we have a couple of seepage leaks in the seabed. None of these leaks were present when they began drilling. The required geological surveys stated no seeps within 1,500 feet of the initial well location prior to drilling. Kent Wells has confirmed the presence of methane in samples of gas leaking from sea floor (15 %).

Old original BOP is also leaking
New leak area is just underneath the flex joint near the top of the BOP. Large sludge formations are developing that have mud-like characteristics. Leakage rate appears greater then the 3 Ram Stack Base Leaks.

Apparently the plan is going to be to start with a Static Top Kill followed later by a Bottom Kill. The Top Kill will put mud all the way down to the bottom of the drill pipe. The bottom kill will put mud into the annulus area around the pipe. There are two problems with the plan that are immediately recognizable.

Will the leaking BOP and 3 Ram Stack handle the increase in pressure during the Top Kill ? They are apparently leaking at metal seals (da gaskets). Kent thinks it is due to the formation of gas bubbles in the seal. They will supposedly only need to temporarily increase the pressure while injecting the kill mud and forcing the oil product downward. Once the kill mud is inside the assemblies it will dramatically lower the pressure. So they see this as just a small short term gamble.

They will also have to convert the Q4000 from collection to mud injection. Takes a day or two. This is a gamble because if they spring a leak, the Q4000 wont be ready for collection. The Caribbean is also coming alive again with potential Tropical Storms developing.

I’m still not seeing these bad leaks. Maybe I’m looking at the wrong well?

Ack!! Are you watching the Skandi ROV2 feed right now? There’s a large blackish blob migrating out from underneath something, I can’t tell exactly what it is but the blackness is spreading so quickly it’s got to be a horribly bad thing that has happened......

Oh, it’s a shadow. Never mind.

Thanks for the informative update.

//This is a gamble because if they spring a leak, the Q4000 wont be ready for collection. The Caribbean is also coming alive again with potential Tropical Storms developing//

As I see that it is a small gamble in the overall scheme of things. Why? if it does spring a leak from other than the BOP it could well overwhelm the Q4000, and if storms come do in the Q4000 will have to move away anyway.

This could explain the lower than expected pressure?

Now that was a good show in its early years!

Some of the episodes were very engaging, and they had good actors and hot intelligent babes doing the female roles. Maybe you thought the same about Crichton, if not thats okay we all got different tastes.

ALL the characters were freaky IMO, that was part of the shows attraction for me. That and the space/sci fi background for the scripts etc.

I wish they could/would make some movies out of two books from Arthur C. Clarke, being ‘Childhoods End’ and ‘Rendezvous with Rama’
