Off topic question: Some time ago Glenn talked about how Goebbels had credited the American Progressive Movement for teaching him about effective propaganda. I mentioned it on another thread and was asked for a source.

Do any Beckerheads here remember this and specifically the source he was quoting? My recollection is that he was quoting the writings of Goebbels or some other NAZI propaganda officer.

I understand why Beck is taking this route, but he's said several times that Sherrod said this was about those who have, and those who don't. However, she specifically stated that it was about race. She went to correct herself on that statement, then restated again that it was about race.

Beck's example of someone's past was his own. He made some statement that this is like him getting fired because somebody chopped a statement about him being a drunk. The problem with this is that Beck was never in a position of power. Also, drinking hardly has the stigma of racism. The American taxpayers aren't paying Beck's salary. Ailes can do with him what he likes. However, when my hard earned money goes to pay the salaries of people who withhold service due to race, I have issues.

As for the argument that this was 20+ years ago, should we be ok with federal appointments of people who were active in the Klan in the 80s?

I applaud people if they change their ways and rebuke their past actions. May they be successful in their private endeavors, but I do not want them in a position of federal power taking my money.

I do not care about people’s pasts although it is intensely interesting to discover why people are the way they are. I think it is valuable to learn from other people’s mistakes but I don’t usually condemn them for those mistakes—unless they never learn from them.

Life is always about changing—always.....I just care that people are trying to become the best they can possibly become through education and living. Everyone hits road bumps—it is part of life and NO ONE is perfect or loved by all. I think life is exciting and I thank God I was born in this country so I want to see it exist for my grandchildren.

Bernays' celebration of propaganda helped define public relations, but it did not win the industry many friends. In a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter described Bernays and Ivy Lee as "professional poisoners of the public mind, exploiters of foolishness, fanaticism and self-interest." And history showed the flaw in Bernays' identification of the "manipulation of the masses" as a natural and necessary feature of a democratic society. The fascist rise to power in Germany demonstrated that propaganda could be used to subvert democracy as easily as it could be used to "resolve conflict."

In his 1965 autobiography, Bernays recalls a dinner at his home in 1933 where

Karl von Weigand, foreign correspondent of the Hearst newspapers, an old hand at interpreting Europe and just returned from Germany, was telling us about Goebbels and his propaganda plans to consolidate Nazi power. Goebbels had shown Weigand his propaganda library, the best Weigand had ever seen. Goebbels, said Weigand, was using my book Crystallizing Public Opinion as a basis for his destructive campaign against the Jews of Germany. This shocked me. ... Obviously the attack on the Jews of Germany was no emotional outburst of the Nazis, but a deliberate, planned campaign.
