(BALTIMORE, MD) NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous issued the following statement today after learning of the resignation of Shirley Sherrod of the United States Department of Agriculture:
Since our founding in 1909, the NAACP has been a multi-racial, multi-faith organization that-- while generally rooted in African American communities-- fights to end racial discrimination against all Americans.
We concur with US Agriculture Secretary Vilsack in accepting the resignation of Shirley Sherrod for her remarks at a local NAACP Freedom Fund banquet.
Racism is about the abuse of power. Sherrod had it in her position at USDA. According to her remarks, she mistreated a white farmer in need of assistance because of his race.
We are appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers.
Her actions were shameful. While she went on to explain in the story that she ultimately realized her mistake, as well as the common predicament of working people of all races, she gave no indication she had attempted to right the wrong she had done to this man.
The reaction from many in the audience is disturbing. We will be looking into the behavior of NAACP representatives at this local event and take any appropriate action.
We thank those who brought this to our national office's attention, as there are hundreds of local fundraising dinners each year.
Sherrod's behavior is even more intolerable in light of the US Department of Agriculture's well documented history of denying opportunities to African American, Latino, Asian American, and Native American farmers, as well as female farmers of all races. Currently, justice for many of these farmers is being held up by Congress. We would hope all who share our outrage at Sherrod's statements would join us in pushing for these cases to be remedied.
The NAACP will continue to advance the ideals of America and fight for freedom, justice and fairness for all Americans.
Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.
Apparently, many within the NAACP aren't since those she spoke to were laughing about it and nothing was said about her remarks until they were revealed in the media.
I hope I did not imply that you were condoning the actions of Sherrod or the National officials at the NAACP; I didn’t intend to do so.
“The Freedom Fund Awards Dinner is a prestigious event which heralds the accomplishments of individuals who have made enormous contributions to humankind and helped to make a better world for us all.”
That quote is from the NAACP website. If I sat in an audience and heard a white person say, upon receiving an award for ‘enormous contributions to humankind and helped make a better world for us all’, that she did so by helping people based on their race (not helping black people) I would have been open mouthed stunned. I would have walked out. I walked out of a church service in disgust when it practiced bigotry (one South American ethnicity against another). Now, if that church had a national head organization - I’d wonder how things could go so far afield at a local church and not have anyone else in the organization know about it, hear complaints about it, hear rumors etc.And while I would understand that the head organization doesn’t police sermons at the local level - I’d still expect them to accept more responsibility than did the NAACP because this sort of attitude did not originate in one dinner - it is cultivated over time and green lighted by local leadership.
Does anyone know how Breitbart got the video?
I agree completely. The fact that there wasn't outrage in the audience is a glaring indicator of problems at the local level. The local staff will probably be replaced and there will probably be a change-over in the local board.
Ugly, ugly stuff.
If Andrew has more (and you know him, he likes lots of proof), this could really rip the legs out from under the NAACP.
If it does, it does. At that point, I will no longer defend them because the problem is systemic, not a fluke.
They started this food fight. If they come out stained and stinking like a garbage pail, they won't have anyone to blame but themselves.
“We are appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers.”
Appalled? You weren’t appalled when Sherrod said it a year or more ago.
I think what Jealous is appalled about is that one of their plantation managers stupidly let the cat out of the bag.
Well, four months or twelve months, the operative word is “months”. It should have been a couple days.
I think this particular target was even bigger than Brietbart knew. The incident raises a question: How many other multi-million dollar “settlements” does the Government award? Are many of the “settlements” true lawsuits or are they disguised grants based on race? How hard does the Government fight these disputes? Sherrod was clearly expendable. She didn’t really need the job because she already had 13 million dollars. As some have hinted about her behavior, it is the tip of the iceberg. But I think that these “settlements” are also suspicious and are also the tip of the iceberg.
Mark Williams didn’t have nuthin’ on Neal Boortz back in the day.

If you have bever heard this, this is Royal Marshall. It is at once the funniest but most truthful clip you will ever hear.
Well someone in that audience recorded that while setting right in front of everyone else. Do you think for a moment if it were a “whitey” recording that in plain view of everyone else that she would not have seen it? Someone there had a problem with her words, Who knows, perhaps that person did send this to NAACP HQ and received no response. There are good sould on both sides of this food fight and those souls will lead to the eventual cleasing of the cesspool of politically connected and corrupt ruling classes.
Wrong. Even Sean Hannity has said he is a member. He tried it just to see if it could be done. Three of the founders were white as well. It has just morphed into a myopic charachature of the last two letters of its acronym because of the media and shameless politicians who want to keep the “Country Class” as far away from the “Ruling Class” as possible from both sides of the aisle.
translation of the NAACP statement...”I’m sorry we got caught and had to fire her, those pesky camcorders are now banned at our events”.
“We are appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers.”
First they are only “appalled” because she got caught and then they try to qualify it with things that happened 150 years ago.
People see right through this game the NAACP is trying to play and they know how the MSM is ignoring it.
NAACP = Glass House
Breitbart = stones
score one for the good guys
Bwahahahahahahahahahaha
Point to Breitbart.
Now, when’s the next tape going to come out? That seems to be Breitbart’s M.O. — trickle the information out to let the opposition hang themselves out to dry.
This could play out like the ACORN tapes: going from denouncement of an “isolated incident” to spluttering denial and defensive posture of shooting the messenger instead of dealing with the issue.
