(BALTIMORE, MD) NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous issued the following statement today after learning of the resignation of Shirley Sherrod of the United States Department of Agriculture:
Since our founding in 1909, the NAACP has been a multi-racial, multi-faith organization that-- while generally rooted in African American communities-- fights to end racial discrimination against all Americans.
We concur with US Agriculture Secretary Vilsack in accepting the resignation of Shirley Sherrod for her remarks at a local NAACP Freedom Fund banquet.
Racism is about the abuse of power. Sherrod had it in her position at USDA. According to her remarks, she mistreated a white farmer in need of assistance because of his race.
We are appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers.
Her actions were shameful. While she went on to explain in the story that she ultimately realized her mistake, as well as the common predicament of working people of all races, she gave no indication she had attempted to right the wrong she had done to this man.
The reaction from many in the audience is disturbing. We will be looking into the behavior of NAACP representatives at this local event and take any appropriate action.
We thank those who brought this to our national office's attention, as there are hundreds of local fundraising dinners each year.
Sherrod's behavior is even more intolerable in light of the US Department of Agriculture's well documented history of denying opportunities to African American, Latino, Asian American, and Native American farmers, as well as female farmers of all races. Currently, justice for many of these farmers is being held up by Congress. We would hope all who share our outrage at Sherrod's statements would join us in pushing for these cases to be remedied.
The NAACP will continue to advance the ideals of America and fight for freedom, justice and fairness for all Americans.
Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.
I am seeing a pattern here.
What makes me smile is that if the NAACP wants to play tit for tat with the Tea Party, the Tea Party has a ton of tats.
It is dangerous for the next generation to permit a continuation of the double standard of race hate in America. We have to lower the boom on black racists and they have to be denied power just as we deny power from white racists. We have to end racist diversity tribal doctrines from the schools as well. If it is racist for whites; it is racist for minorities.
Finally the radical left’s white elite are the KKK of modern society. They got there’s and their kids are covered while they brew hatred against white American non-Jews to keep control over America. We have to stop cooperating with them and jumping through their race and sex division hoops.
I’m sure she’s the only one.
The NAACP should have condemned her the next day, not waited until they were "caught" by Breitbart.
“The NAACP was forced to do the right thing for once. They did not apologize so willingly. This is significant because as Breitbart said, he has samples (plural) of NAACP racism, and they know it.”
Andrew is a smart Guy.
He waited for the opportune moment to fire this Arrow.
I would not doubt that he has a Quiver full in reserve.
Don’t use the Hammer until you need to.
The NAACP has stepped in it, and they are at risk now of losing some big donors because of it.
It’s about damned time BLACK RACISM in America got the exposure it deserves. I’ve been dealing with this crap for 2+ decades.
NAACP leaders are probably urging members to purge all their videos as we speak.
“They got theres and their kids are covered while they brew hatred against white American non-Jews to keep control over America.”
Do I hear a little Anti-Semitism creeping in there?
It is Ironic that you post something that decrys race Hatred and then Include that Crap.
So you think you are better than a jew?
I think they learned only half the lesson from the ACORN tapes. If they really learned the lesson from the ACORN tapes, wouldn’t they have shut up and backed down off their “tea party is racist” vote when Breitbart called them out and said he had the goods?
The one-half lesson they learned is to deal with the issue ASAP when the first tape was let loose. But now that Breitbart has started, I don’t think he’s going to stop until he’s discredited the NAACP and destroyed their ability to make such pronouncements as they did against the Tea Party.
Liberals and the press will learn to fear Breitbart. They really will. Breitbart has a very good handle on the pack mentality and echo-chamber mentality of the press... And he uses it against them.
What Breitbart has shown is to use the small stuff as a warm-up and get the press to finally be unable to ignore the issue, so that by the time he uncorks the strongest stuff, everyone is tuned in. Very clever, IMO.
“The reaction from many in the audience is disturbing. We will be looking into the behavior of NAACP representatives at this local event and take any appropriate action. “
Is this the same NAACP that promoted phony lawsuits against gun manufacturers and called the Tea Party racist? It now seems to be another organization entirely; maybe the reincarnation of Booker T. Washington or someone like him took over from the likes of Kwesei Mfume. In any event, it just went up considerably in my estimation of it.
NAACP deserves a LOT of credit for this statement no matter what else we may think of it. It is an enormous contrast to the behavior of Barack Obama’s church, which gave a standing ovation to Michael Pfleger’s “There were a whole lot of white people crying.”
I think that person is talking of the radical lefts white elite, not their own personal view.
Depends on how many local chapters there are. The NAACP is a voluntary organization, I believe. Each chapter may be chartered under the national chapter, but may be staffed by local folks and local volunteers.
It's not easy for the National folks to know everything the local folks are doing. It's like holding the National CPAs accountable if someone at the local level remarked at an annual dinner about how they "worked the system, wink, nudge" to help a client.
Would that be fair? No, it would not.
That being said, the NAACP should have been more careful not to throw stones at the TEA Party. Americans are no longer beholden to the MSM for their news, and people with cell phone cameras/recorders are everywhere.
Something unpleasant was bound to turn up eventually.
I did my good deed for everyone and ventured over to the Dimwitted Unsophisticated site for everyone and found a real gem there. “Racism only exists when the people oppressed have no power. White men have had power for as long as the earth has existed.”
My shower was very refreshing!
No, not really -it is the norm among the perverted socialist redistributors and their useful idiots...
Thank you for the reply. The only part I don’t really agree with is your example:
“....if someone at the local level remarked at an annual dinner about how they “worked the system, wink, nudge” to help a client.”
This was a gov. official receiving an award; not just a generic ‘someone’. Speaking at the award dinner, she made racist remarks that were well received during and after the event by attendees. This is bigger than a ‘remark’ about working the system. This is ‘I decided whether or not to help him based on his race’ coming from a government official in charge of tax revenues and the financial survival of tax payers. I am really shocked that the NAACP audience did not render an objection that could have any effect; tax payers sitting there approving of the government official employing racial discrimination to determine who gets help. The NAACP is supposed to have formed to fight that very kind of abuse. Then to have the NAACP lecture the Tea Party on addressing the racist signs that may or may not have been carried by Tea Partiers to begin with - it all seems more objectionable than your example.
I think the expectation of Tea Partiers was that they disavow or disassociate from the supposed sign carriers (I know some were plants but what about others?). Note that the NAACP isn’t disavowing itself from the kind of people who would ‘appreciate’ that woman for practicing racial bigotry; the NAACP expresses ‘concern’. Certainly ‘concern’ would not have been enough for the Tea Party if a Caucasian stood up and advocated unfair distribution of tax monies based on race. The Dems and NAACP want to portray the Tea Party as based on racism but point an actual racial bigot receiving an NAACP AWARD from the GA chapter, for heavens sake, and that is relegated to ‘fringe’ local dinners, hundreds of dinners per year. How many state award dinners are there? (depends who you ask, some politicians would say 57) Weren’t there thousands of protesters NOT carrying offensive signs and internet posts by lefties bragging about crashing the Tea Parties with racist signs? I guess he can only be ‘concerned’ by that performance of the NAACP state awards dinner because there’s bound to be more videos of more places (can’t disavow too many!) - or so Breitbart seems to hint. So the NAACP is ‘concerned’ by some in the audience who approved of her bigotry - are they concerned about all the others who continue to attend events and who did not contact the NAACP headquarters or the media before now? And how does concern ‘operate’? It doesn’t; at most it is a very soft indication that one should not be so blatant in this age of cell phones. ‘Concern’ is when you talk to children about being aware that some are less fortunate etc. These are adults who listened with approval to a story about the government practicing racial discrimination.
I am sure someone has already mentioned it but the NAACP has known of her statements since the banquet in March. Shame on them for not saying something before now.
Believe me, I'm not defending this creature or the ugly things she has said. I'm glad she was forced to resign for having said them. I am also not defending the NAACP's smears against the TEA Party (of which I am an active member and volunteer).
I'm trying to point out how it was possible that the national folks did not know this was said until Andrew released the video.
I host monthly educational luncheons as part of my organization and we do not tape them; National staff does not review them. These types of meetings happen all over the country, in numerous not-for-profits and non-profits nationwide, with only local oversight.
A national organization can set the structure, the mission statement, and even provide training to the local offices. That doesn't mean everyone at the local level follows it.
The same is true in for-profit corporations. The national office may put out strict guidelines against X; some idiot breaks it and the local office looks the other way. Does that mean the national corporation approves of X? Of course not.
I'll wager that the NAACP will conduct a review (out of fear of additional tapes surfacing which will damage their flagging credibility); I wouldn't be surprised to see more heads roll over this. I am very confident it will be a priority topic at their next annual convention.
Given my anger over the way they treated the TEA Party recently, I don't want to give them the benefit of the doubt. It would be easier to think this smarmy race-baiting is typical or systemic instead of a fluke; however, knowing what I know about how these types of organizations function, I have reached the logical conclusion that it is not only possible - but highly probable - that the national folks honestly did not know until they were shown the proof. Like I said, they should not have thrown stones.
