GOP Sees Path to Control of Senate
Wall Street Journal ^ | JULY 18, 2010, 9:20 P.M. ET | NAFTALI BENDAVID

WASHINGTON—Democrats for the first time are acknowledging that Republicans could retake the Senate this November if everything falls into place for the GOP, less than two years after Democrats held a daunting 60-seat majority.

Leaders of both parties have believed for months that Republicans could win the House, where every lawmaker faces re-election. But a change of party control in the Senate, where only a third of the members are running and Republicans must capture 10 seats, seemed out of the question.

That's no longer the case. The emergence of competitive Republican candidates in Wisconsin, Washington and California—Democratic-leaning states where polls now show tight races—bring the number of seats that Republicans could seize from the Democrats to 11.

Democrats now control the Senate 59-41—after the death of Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who was replaced by Republican Sen. Scott Brown—including two independents who usually vote with them. That means Republicans need 10 seats to take a 51-49 advantage.

Republicans would have to win virtually every competitive race to retake the Senate, without losing any seats of their own—clearly an uphill climb. The trouble for Democrats is that many trends are against them. Surveys show that Republicans are more motivated than Democrats to go to the polls, and that voters are looking for new leadership in Congress.

"I think there is definitely a chance" of losing the Senate, said Democratic strategist Gary Nordlinger, a Washington-based media consultant. "I wouldn't call it a probability, but there is certainly a chance."

"Republicans still have to [win] all the competitive races in order to get to a majority, but at least there are enough seats on the table to pull it off," said Nathan Gonzales, political editor of the non-partisan Rothenberg Political Report.

Most of those are appointed right? Or are they elected in your area?

Great charts. The GOP should use them.

The only way to stop Obama is to get the house convene the comitees and start sending out the cepinas.

Building bridges is simply not in the cards. Any Republican candidate who talks about such things should be replaced by someone who doesn’t before the Fall election.

I'm with ya. I've got even bigger plans for the second week. A good President would spend the first month writing nothing but “I hereby rescind Executive Order #...” 12 hours a day, six days a week.

I have cable and I’m watching baseball right now. Luckily you didn’t list MLB in your little rant.

Frantzie has a mysterious grudge against Cable, even though they are less than 10% of the market, and more than half of their programming is specialty programs.

""Republicans still have to [win] all the competitive races in order to get to a majority,"

Not sure his math is correct:

Competitive (or easy GOP pickups) are:

Washington, California, Nevada, Colorado, North Dakota, Arkansas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Delaware and possibly Connecticutt

That's 12. Have we conceded a Dem victory in BOTH the New York US Senate seats that are up??? I can't believe Gillibrand is going to get a walk-off. Seems ticket-splitters might prefer to vote Chunks Schumer for one and a pubbie for the other, but then the GOP in NY is not run by smart people ( as we discovered in the Scozzafuzza affair last year).

“Without Leadership and a plan with the house, it will be worthless.”

.
You haven’t been paying attention.

The ‘plan’ is repeal obamacare, and pass tax cuts to reinvigorate the economy.

Thanks for the chart, Pan

But there is no way Bennet here in Colorado will keep that seat. He’s a weak candidate, an Obama rubber stamp, running in a very bad year in a state where both Republicans AND Independents outnumber the Democrats.

And there is an election in Delaware, where most observers are calling for a GOP win.

AND, the Connecticut seat(Dodd’s seat) in not automatic for the Marine that lied about Vietnam service.

No it is the total delivery of information via Comcast, Direct TV etc. The 5 networks own at least 95% of teh cable channels and it is all pro you know hwo.

Fox? 7% Saudi ownership but huge influence. Murdoch does what China nd the Islamic world want because he wants access to those markets.

MLB same thing - steroid league. The leagues support you know who and the sports monpolies screw taxpayers for stadiums. The NFL and NBA are the worse. TV controls the sheep.

the really good news
is 2012 and 2014 are very good years for the republican senate. a lot of first time weaklings rats are up and we will win even more.
I don’t see 11, but 7 seems pretty plausible.

Barbara dumb-as-a-Box-of-rocks-er has never really had a competent opponent. I think Carly will beat her. They’re currently neck and neck in the polls.

Okay, and Rush Limbaugh had Elton John play at his wedding. If we refused to be entertained by people who disagree with us politically we'd all be sitting on the floor flicking lint balls back and forth listening to the same three country albums over and over.

No thanks.
