BP: Well cap may bottle oil until permanent plug (Did Obama Order More Leaks??)
AP ^ | 7/18/10 | Colleen Long and Harry R. Weber

This is an AP excerpt, there was a story last night (which can't be posted on Free Republic) explicitly stating that Thad Allen had ordered BP to reopen the well after testing because he wanted to measure what the oil flow had been, even though this would further pollute the gulf.

"NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- BP hopes to keep using its giant cork to block oil from reaching the Gulf of Mexico until they plug the blown out well permanently.

Federal officials said earlier that the cap would be tested, and then oil would be pumped through pipes up to ships, which would collect it.

BP said that would require that oil be released for about three days to relieve pressure before the pipes were hooked up.

BP chief operating officer Doug Suttles says Sunday that no one wants to see more oil released into the Gulf of Mexico. He says the cap could stay in place until mud and cement are used to plug the well for good."

We can't post from Bloomberg but their article very explicitly quoted a BP official (West) that the Obama administration had ordered BP to resume oil collection even though this would spill more oil into the gulf, because Thad Allen wants to know what the flow had been and that's the only opportunity he will have to measure it.

Reading between the lines of this article, that's what BP is saying by "hoping" they can keep the well capped. Isn't that a huge story?

Forcing you to self incriminate is ILLEGAL dumping oil into the Gulf is ILLEGAL. This is an illegal regime occupying where the adults used to sit.

BP is finished in the Americas.
Four or five years out, they’ll have sold off all US assets and become a different company.

I was on Alaska's North Slope when BP bought out Standard Oil. Things went downhill very rapidly soon after. I decided to head for greener pastures. Any non-BP company was the best way to go.

The sooner they dissolve or leave, the better.

The LAST thing Obama wants is for the oil flow to stop. As long as it is flowing, he can blame BP. Once it is stopped, the only thing apparent will be his incompetence in cleaning it up.

One thing for sure, the government is calling the shots. BP can’t wipe their butts without authorizaion.

I believe Suttles would just as soon see the cap stay in place, but Obama via Allen won’t alow it.

I couldn't find the Bloomberg article you were talking about, not a surprise.

BP should be able to come close to an accurate estimate of the oil based on the size of the pipe and the pressure on the new cap etc.

BP should tell 0bama to go down there himself with his tire guage and test the pressure.

I heard that the EPA is going to fine BP X-amount of dollars for every barrel of oil they think has been spilled, so they need to figure out what that is — which means they’re willing to let the pollution go on for a few more days just to figure it out, I guess.

Stopping the flow of oil completely seems highly dangerous to me, as pressure may build-up and create an even bigger disaster. Pump, baby, pump!

I did quite a bit of business with Amoco when they were Amoco. After they became BP, you couldn’t get a straight answer and they were constantly trying to back door the deals...
I predicted BP would sell all their American assets with four or five years and from the look of it, this may happen with the next 24 months.
There was talk last night on the news that BP might be faced with a massive civil fine, amounting to something like $22 billion. When added to the $20 billion lost business payment they’ve agreed to make, I’m not sure they can survive.
500,000 bbl/day refinery in Whiting, Indiana, anyone ?

Ha! And, just who do you claim were the adults? Surely, not those in the Bush administration.

.....but Obama via Allen won’t alow it......

The rational for all this certainly has to do with some lawerly action. Until now it was not possible to state with a high degree of certainty what the flow rate is (was).

For the historical record or for the court room evidence, the flow should be permitted to accurately measure and record the flow over a specified time. That is then the record and it can be argued to be more or even less at an earlier time, but there is a hard and unequivocal number established.

If not lawerly, then scientific record is the basis. To not measure the flow when it was possible would be dereliction of historical duty.

It is all lawyer $hit. Trying to establish BP’s liability and how big the fine will be - in the $20 billion range.

Sometimes it seems like Obama is ‘rubbing our noses in it’ I mean some stuff is so outrageous, it’s like he is saying, ‘look what I can get away with because the MSM will ignore it’ Like NASA’s formost priority to be reaching out to Muslims, for instance.

The fine is one aspect. Another is the royalty. Someone noted that BP must pay a royalty on the oil recovered. Even though lost, it was “recovered”.

In my mind, it is trivial when compared with the value of the oil yet to be recovered from the lease. However to a starving and debt laden government, every dime counts.

My guess is that the current pressure measurement yields a flow rate much lower than what the government was hoping to charge BP for.

That’s why they want to put BP into collection, in the hopes that one day they might collect more oil than what is calculated; then they could use that number for all the days they didn’t collect oil, for the big fine they want to levy.
