I grew up on gravel roads in Michigan, and to be honest I kind of liked them. There was no dust at all, in fact the road I grew up on was so well packed and compressed with oil I could lay dark black rubber on it without trenching it was so hard.
They probably don’t coat them with anything anymore for “environmental” reasons, and then again back in the early eighties we were driving much bigger and heavier cars, so maybe the Festiva or Smart Car owners are the ones having all the problems.

Absolutely nothing wrong with chip and oil roads, IMHO.

Same here but using the money for something else is what really needs to stop.

My road is engineered. They put down tar or oil (not sure which) and then fill it with gravel. They did it ten years ago and the road has outlasted any asphalt road in the area. Asphalt is a quick, easy fix but now oil is expensive and they can't replace them as easily as before.
Can't wait till we get of off oil altogether. It'll be fun driving on... I don't know what they'll make the roads out of then.
I bet Gore and his cronies are buying up cement mines right now.

It’s going to be quite difficult to ride my bicycle on gravel roads.

yup... and the roads round here that aren't completely oiled/tarred are at least done for a stretch in front of houses and barns
