That was how my legal immigrant great-grandparents survived the Depression! My grandpa shot rocksalt at shovel leaners one time. They decided to climb the cherry trees and eat the fruit during one of their breaks. That was the fruit that my ancestors used to make their liquor. When Pop told them to stop eating the cherries and get out of the trees, they wouldn’t listen. So, he had no choice but to shoot!

My forbears did the same, plus there was the rationing and the wage freeze from WWII. The traps and firearms were passed down.

Want to see something scary? Inform the kids that they'll have to live on WWII rations for a few months. For example, their entire month's ration of canned, dried, or frozen food would be used up if they bought, for example, just two cans of pineapple (click pic for more info)...
