ST. LOUIS • Mike Bates went to the John A. Cochran Medical Center on Monday to find out whether improper safety practices in the midtown hospital's dental clinic had infected him with a serious disease.

Thirty minutes later, he walked out, with more questions than answers.

"They took six vials of blood, handed him two packages of condoms and sent him on his way," said his girlfriend, Teri Waggoner.
