Council supports Burbank — but not in writing

Blistered by Republican legislators, some residents and the Minutemen for being soft on immigration enforcement, Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank has the strong backing of City Hall.

Sort of.

In an impromptu move Tuesday, City Councilman Soren Simonsen suggested the council pass a resolution supporting Burbank’s controversial stance against an Arizona-style anti-immigration bill.

The chief is out there “taking a lot of heat,” said Simonsen, but shouldn’t feel like he’s on an island. A resolution, he predicted, would send the broader community a loud message that Burbank, Mayor Ralph Becker and the council are speaking with one voice.

The latest CBS poll indicates that 57% agree with Arizona's S.B.1070, while 17% feel it doesn't go far enough. Why is Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank still in office?
