Ambulances were called to La Jolla Wednesday afternoon after at least 30 people were stung by sting rays.

The attacks happened at both La Jolla Shores and Blacks Beach up the coast to the north. Lifeguards said that at one point, they were treating 11 or 12 people at the same time. Paramedics were called in to assist with triage because of the abundance of victims.

New rule: if we’re talking about Black’s Beach, we NEED pics! (That is, if its still the nude beach for southern California that I remember from the late 70s!) :)

Stingrays show up when the water get warmer. They are not agressive and they don't attack. Their sting is defensive when a swimmer steps on them.

Any body surfer or boogie boarder learns the stingray shuffle quickly. Push you feet along the bottom and scare those little boogers away before you step on them. They don't like to be stepped on anymore then we like to get their stinger jammed in our feet.

Gaia is retaliating against humanity for releasing oil into her oceans.

Also, when you go swimming in the ocean, you assume a certain level of risk. You aren’t on land anymore, and you’re playing around in a world that isn’t you’re own. If you want to make sure you aren’t going to get stung or attack by anything, however unlikely, play around in the pool instead.

Stingrays are much worse. It hurts real bad for about 6 hours and can nag you up to a year. It's a nasty puncture wound on top of the poison. Hot as heck water is the only thing that can make the pain go away. Further they can be in astonishingly shallow water and even in shore breakers (during breeding). Shuffle your feet!

Sound words. Even very close to the shore bathing has it’s dangers.

Yuk! I got stung really bad by jelly fish but the welts and pain only lated a few hours but did have redness for a month or so.
I’ll remember the “shuffle” next time I’m in the water.
