WASHINGTON – The White House plans to promote its work to develop electric cars this week, dispatching administration officials across the nation to discuss advanced batteries and new vehicles powered by electricity.
President Barack Obama will travel to Holland, Mich., on Thursday for the groundbreaking of a Compact Power Inc. factory, which received $151 million from a federal stimulus program to open the $303 million plant. The factory is expected to manufacture lithium ion cells and employ about 450 people by 2013.
Pushing clean energy, Obama has vowed to bring 1 million plug-in hybrid vehicles to U.S. highways by 2015 and his administration has set aside billions of stimulus dollars to bolster U.S. battery manufacturers. The funding is aimed at creating a battery industry in the U.S. that can compete with Asian manufacturers and help the U.S. reduce its dependence on imported oil.

I feel comfortable saying that this operation will be totally unable to compete with already existing "hybrids." If Obama even imagines selling me an automobile powered entirely by battery, he can just keep on imagining. It ain't gonn'a happen.
The Obama administration has provided $2.4 billion in federal grants to develop next-generation electric vehicles and batteries. The government has estimated the stimulus funds could spur the production of 500,000 advanced batteries a year by late 2014.
A report to be released Thursday by the Energy Department will estimate that stimulus funding could bring down battery costs from $33,000 for a battery with a 100-mile range to $16,000 by the end of 2013 and $10,000 by the end of 2015. More than 20,000 electric vehicle charging stations will be available by 2012, compared with less than 500 before the stimulus program began, the report will say.
It’s probably cleaner to burn gas in your tank than it is to burn coal to produce the electricity to power these cars.

And where will all that electrical power come from? No power plants are being built. And will electrics lubricate and also convert into plastics and the myriad of other essentials in a modern society. Obama and the Greenies are scientific retards.

U.S. President Barack Obama will attend a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday for an LG Chem plant in Holland, Michigan, the company said Sunday. It is very unusual for an incumbent U.S. president to appear at such an event for a foreign company, and it is the first time for a Korean firm.
LG is investing US$300 million to build the plant which will produce batteries for electric vehicles. First-phase commercial production is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2012, and once completed in 2013 the plant will churn out lithium ion cells for 200,000 hybrid cars annually.
Experts say that Obama’s decision to attend the event stems from the U.S. government’s efforts to boost the industry for next-generation vehicles and batteries there. In his first speech to a joint session of Congress last year, Obama said, “New plug-in hybrids roll off our assembly lines, but they will run on batteries made in Korea.”

Isn't unusual for a president to appear at a groundbreaking ceremony, period? I work as a reporter for a weekly paper--these are the kind of events mayors and local congresspeople go to.

Ever notice something? Communists and other “central planners” always seem to have these sweeping goals that will fix things. 50,000 cops,, 50,000 teachers, a million electric cars, 1000 windmills,,, 10,000 Americorps journalist volunteers,,,,whatever.
It is the substitution of drama and stagecraft, for true action. A true policy sets free and moral policies,,, and has no freakin idea how many electric cars will result.

The Boston City Council has mandated that all taxis that operate in Boston must be Hybrids in five years to cut down on pollution. The batteries in a Prius don’t kick in until the vehicle is going 40 MPH. Would anyone care to venture a guess what the top speed is on Commonwealth Avenue?
