Dozens of layoffs effective at midnight, barring last minute deal.
Oakland's police chief is making some dire claims about what his force will and will not respond to if planned layoffs happen tonight at midnight.
Chief Anthony Batts listed exactly 44 situations that his officers no longer respond to and they include grand theft, burglary, vehicle collision, identity theft and vandalism. He says if you live and Oakland and one of the above happens to you, you need to let police know on-line.
Some 80 officers will be let go at midnight if a last-minute deal is not reached. Negotiations are going on at Oakland City Hall today in the mayor's office. That is about a tenth of the force.
Batts said the 80 officers slated to be laid off - mostly new officers - are "pretty sad and pretty depressed," and those feelings are shared by the Police Department as a whole.

He isn’t being original here. Fremont (Also in Alameda County) has been “not responding” to such situations for several years. Guess where he got the idea.
Our glorious Police chief started it by not responding to home burglar alarms. It has gotten worse - now if you file an accident report, it’s done later, then some days after the fact a couple of “community police,” i.e. volunteers show up to ask if there is any other things you didn’t report.
Long ago, I lived in the mountains and we had a dog who was a good scout like that, we'd see a kill or something we thought she'd be interested in and call to her , she'd give a quick sniff look at us and run down the trail as if to say, "Yeah, I saw that 20 minutes ago, you should see what's up ahead!!
Alex Jones is like that dog to us.

of course, they’re laying off cops... but not reducing union pensions for retired govt employees... of course.

I suppose though they will still write speeding tickets and arrest people who don't have a CCW permit. If the old hack were to be serious about crime responses, he should just say the Oakland PD will not respond to misdemeanor complaints unless there is an actual injury, including "Domestic Violence" allegations.
As a nation decays and falls, the basic services of the outlying areas are often the first to go. How long till the Fedgov abandons the provinces?
Of course not. In my lifetime I don’t think that a single social program has EVER been cut.
