Hahah! Well aren’t you someone special...thanks for the lesson in how to behave in a holier-than-thou manner.

Here’s the thing you won’t get. I’ll pray for the soul of Mr. Steinbrenner. Fun to hate? Not HATE, hate. Sports fan hate. Do I need to explain that?

Mr. Steinbrenner has been personally and quietly generous to a number of the old-timers who played before generous pension funds. He took care of some of baseball’s great and very-goods who were down on their luck (both financial and health-wise) with stipends and sinecures.

I believe Al Davis of the Raiders does the same thing. Behind the scenes he takes care of a lot of ex-players and their families. He considers all of them part of his "family" and does what it takes to see they have what they need.

It's funny how similar George and Al are in that respect plus I believe both of them were born on the 4th of July.

Check out the ESPN boards for more ‘classy comments’ from Red Sox fans.

A well-settled antipathy between Boston and New York is as much a part of the game as hot dogs and beer. Of course the Boston fans hated Steinbrenner. Lots of Yankee fans did, too. I would expect nothing else.

Short of and expletive-filled rant, I am prepared to cut Bosox fans a lot of slack on this one. It’s how they show they care.

The Yankees were all about winning.
The Boss was all about winning.

A great Yankee has died.

RIP, George Steinbrenner.

Even a Red Sox fan like me has to say “Rest in Peace, George. Rest in peace.”

In the 70’s, I had a friend who worked for GMAC. He would tell of checks coming in, signed by Steinbrenner, to pay an auto loan. It seems a certain Yankee at the time (can't remember which) was in deep financial trouble. The player had little education and wasn't capable of handling his sudden influx of wealth. George had taken over the player's finances, made sure all his bills were paid and put him on an allowance.

The fact that I’m a lifelong Red Sox fan may have something to do with my deep animosity toward him ;)

I am a Red Sox fan too, but I still had great respect for the man.

When the Red Sox have their annual Jimmy Fund drive (for Dana Farber Cancer Institute), Mr. Steinbrenner always quietly donated large amounts of cash ($10,000 or so.)

The whole RedSox/Yankee rival thing was (and is) a marketing ploy that is beneficial to both teams and both cities.

Baseball is a business, and no one did it better than Mr. Steinbrenner. Rest in peace, sir.

Actually, the real anger is reserved for their own. I am a Dodger fan. I might be able to imagine an invinceably ignorant Steinbrenner eventually in Heaven. Imagining Walter O'Malley there takes considerably more effort.

“It’s my belief this guy single-handedly ruined the great American pastime..”

ITA. He founded Moneyball.

If that’s what you think then you don’t really understand the concept of what Moneyball was about. In fact, Moneyball is probably a direct response in the opposite direction to how Steinbrenner went about business.

That's a nice story and will cover a lot of Steinbrenner's egotistical sins. May God rest his soul.

Modern ballplayers (I think the minimum MLB salary is $250K per year now) have no idea, and even less appreciation, what their prececessors went through.

I recently finished a wonderful book on the 1960 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates called Kiss It Goodbye.

Just s mere 50 years ago, players were expected to work full-time in the off-season to supplement their seasonal baseball salary or find other ways to economize. Vernon Law, the Cy Young pitcher for that year, lived in an apartment with a shared kitchen and walked to the ballpark. ElRoy Face, the premier relief pitcher in the league, worked as a carpenter in the off-season. Everyone else on that great team had similar gigs or stories to tell to make ends meet.
