There are two King Arthurs of England. One was a warlord before the Angles arrived in England, the other was a King who was usurped within Great Britain by John I but ruled Brittania (which was in France), and was the chosen heir of Richard the Lionheart and recognized as the legitimate King of Great Britain (as opposed to John I) by most of Europe.
It was during the reign of the latter Arthur that the Sancta Caliz (”Holy Chalice”) (Graal means chalice in the dialect of southern France) was liberated by French knights who defeated the Moors (black knights?) in Valencia, Spain. So, you see, there is a little truth to the Monty Python bit about “We already got one.” This Arthur also died in Avalon, off the coast of Brittany, France.
It is from the French (don’t forget they ruled England for centuries after Arthur) that most of the legends of the Quest for the Holy Grail come from: “La Morte D’Arthur.”
Would it not be great to prove beyond a doubt that there was such a person.
I think the fact that John’s nephew’s name was Arthur was just a coincidence as far as the Arthurian legend is concerned.
The ‘real’ King Arthur upon which the legend is based is believed to have been a Romano-British Celtic Warlord known as Arturius who fought against the Angles who invaded Britain in force once the Romans departed in 410. Unfortunately, this being the dark ages, not much is known about him other than what Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote about him.
Geoffrey of Monmouth also wrote about a Roman Gallic usurper known as Carausius, who ruled Britain in the late third Century AS, who definitely existed (not least because of the existance of coins he left behind) unfortunately, Geoffrey embedded his story with demonstrable fantasy and untruths, so he is very unreliable as an historian. However, the fact that he wrote about such a figure would suggest that Arthur did exist, but the legend which surrounds him is mostly untrue and full of embellishment...

We know that one of Arthur’s two main battles was fought at a town referred to as the City of Legions. There were only two places with this title. One was St Albans but the location of the other has remained a mystery.”sounds like duff history. The recent discovery of an amphitheatre with an execution stone and wooden memorial to Christian martyrs, has led researchers to conclude that the other location is Chester.
Mr Gidlow said: “In the 6th Century, a monk named Gildas, who wrote the earliest account of Arthur’s life, referred to both the City of Legions and to a martyr’s shrine within it. That is the clincher. The discovery of the shrine within the amphitheatre means that Chester was the site of Arthur’s court and his legendary Round Table.”
This geezer semms to be placing a lot of emphasis on the "marytr's tomb". THis appears to be the only reason for claiming St Albans as "The City of Legions" where one reading of Gildas would have St Alban dying.
But AFAIK, St Albans has never been known as the City of the Legion. The obvious candidates are York, Chester, and Caerlon. (The last is probably the one Gildas is refereing to)
However, "The City of Legions" has only ever been refered to as the site of one of Arthur's battles. Not his home base.
Me, I still like Viroconium. in Shropshire. Still then inhabited, and in the centre of 5th Century British territory.
King Arthur: I am your king.
Woman: Well I didn’t vote for you.
King Arthur: You don’t vote for kings.
Woman: Well how’d you become king then?
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. THAT is why I am your king.
Dennis: Listen, strange women lyin’ in ponds distributin’ swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
A large number of Carausian coins were recently found.
ARTIST: Monty Python
TITLE: Knights of the Round Table
Lyrics and Chords
[Monty Python and the Holy Grail]
We’re Knights of the Round Table
We dance whene’er we’re able
We do routines and chorus scenes
With footwork impeccable
/ C - / G7 C / C F / E7 Am /
We dine well here in Camelot
We eat ham and jam and Spam a lot
/ Dm7 - / FG7 C /
We’re Knights of the Round Table
Our shows are formidable
But many times we’re given rhymes
That are quite unsingable
We’re opera-mad in Camelot
We sing from the diaphragm a lo-o-o-o-t
In war we’re tough and able
Quite indefatigable
Between our quests, we sequin vests
And impersonate Clark Gable
It’s a busy life in Camelot
I have to push the pram a lot
Seated 1000? Imagine being the wait-staff at those events!
Lousy tippers.

Thanks bamahead!...and believe it could have seated 1,000 people. Researchers exploring the legend of Britain's most famous Knight believe his stronghold of Camelot was built on the site of a recently discovered Roman amphitheatre in Chester. While I'm at it, test of the new footer: |

I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.
So we finally learn that the trebuchet was invented just to pass the salt.
Probably where the “more than 8 at a table - 20% tip included in bill” got started.
