Aint wireless technology grand? Tech companies keep finding unique and practical ways to use wireless applications in a range of uses. The latest is a wireless memory card for cameras (no more card readers!). The first one out was Eye-Fi and now Toshiba is talking about their version of this technology Standard Promotion Forum for Memory Cards Embedding Wireless LAN, or SPFfMCEWLAN (the name is tentative). Toshiba released a press release yesterday explaining this new technology: In recent years, as digital cameras have achieved huge rates of market penetration, the need for quick and easy way to share photographs has grown. The new card offers an innovative solution that brings new capabilities to the already very popular SDHC format.
"The card is designed to bring Wi-Fi functionality to digital still cameras that have an SDHC slot. Once in a camera, a card can recognize and communicate with the same type of card in another camera (on a one-to-one basis), and users can exchange photographs quickly and easily. It also allows users to upload and download photographs to and from a server without any need for a cable connection or transfers of the memory card. The card would be able to transfer files in JPEG or RAW formats. The "Standard Promotion Forum for Memory Cards Embedding Wireless LAN" was founded by both Toshiba and Trek 2000 International Ltd., which is based in Singapore. They invited camera manufacturers to join in on the initiative and help with information sharing as well as promoting the new technology.
Big Mistake!!!
Everyone would then have access to private photos of everyone else - no privacy, rampant ID theft, Big Brother always watching.
No Thanks.
I wonder what color the next Toshiba branded buggy whip is going to be.
Well, that one rolls right off the tongue, doesn't it?
I'm waiting for those, too, after reading articles about prototypes that are being tested. Supposed to be on sale sometime this year? They "steal" energy from Wi-Fi networks that are abundant everywhere.
seems like a solution looking for a problem to me.
cant remember the last time I wanted to send a picture to a camera, or the last time I wanted to look at a picture on that beautiful 1 inch low res camera screen.
who knows . . .
maybe there’s too much monitoring of 3g and 4g networks for kids to safely exchange naked pictures of themselves
go figure.
It’s mainly for downloading images from camera to computer without needing to remove card.
“How about wireless battery chargers ?”
Battery chargers do not have memory cards which hold one’s photos or other personal data - (at least not yet).
Just because it might be possible to create a new toy/convenience item, it doesn’t mean that it is wise to do so.
The purpose of wireless devices is to connect to other wireless devices which creates a network.
How many people will take the time to learn how to secure their networked devices from unwanted intrusion? Do they do it now with their cell phones, PDIs, i-pads, and laptops?
No, they rely on the weak security provided by standard protocols and manufacturers. Hackers quickly learn how to defeat those security measures.
Theft of personal data is only one side of the coin. The other side is the unwanted download of data, such as adware, porn, or other content from malicious hackers.
Paranoid? Perhaps, but life has taught me to be more cautious especially when extreme leftists are in power.
...just sayin’
