Not exactly earthshaking news, but interesting. The college my nephew is attending did away with landline phones in the dorms several years ago. I'd assume most universities will follow suit in the near future.
I do wonder, though, what will replace the time-honored tradition of the random dorm prank phone call?

Is this the college where that movie, Breaking Away, took place at?

When I started college in 1971 (Fredonia), I lived in the newest dorm which had -- telephones in each room! It was so cool.
Sigh.

No. That was IU in Bloomington.

My college dorm had a black rotary-dial phone situated in the bathroom of a four-person suite. We used to flush and talk loudly when we knew one of us was on the phone with his girlfriend.

Many of the scenes in the movie were filmed on the Indiana University campus. (Bloomington IN) wikipedia.org
Indiana State= Terre Haute IN
My brother and sister went to Indiana State.

No, that was Bloomington, where Indiana University is. Terre Haute/Indiana State is probably best known for being where Larry Bird played college basketball.

My son is going into his third year at college, and I don’t know his landline number! Cell phone only.

When I was in college (1981-1985) there were no phone jacks in the dorm rooms. There were TWO pay phones on each floor (approx. 50 students per floor.)The guys who had rooms closest to the phone booths had to yell down the hall to the intended recipient of the call.

They probably don’t even have spittoons in the rooms any more.

Anybody else remember when traveling and you had to use the phone in your hotel/motel room? You paid an arm and a leg in access fees and anything else they could tack on.

In the 70’s, Terra Haute was notorious for its prostitutes.

Lest we forget...Larry Bird started college at IU/Bloomington under Bob Knight but was uncomfortable with the size of the campus and such. ISU was more cozy and the rest is histoire...SSZ

Heh, funny you should mention that. My freshman year, nearly every guy on my floor “dipped” with chewing tobacco. A spittoon probably would have come in handy!

Yep, that’s quite true. IIRC, Bird went home and worked as a garbage man for a time before heading back to school at ISU.
Bird’s little brother Eddie played at ISU, too. But he was nowhere near Larry in talent or work ethic.

I always make a point when somebody is talking on their cellphone in the bathroom, to rip the loudest, most disgusting fart I can.
