IN SPRING 1967, my father was a young lawyer trying to figure out what to do with rest of his professional life. As an editor of Temple's Law Review, he had choices. But before embarking on a career that eventually led him to be named a "Legend of the Philadelphia Bar," Dad took a detour to Mississippi.
The year before Martin Luther King Jr. was gunned down in Memphis, Tenn., Ted Flowers spent a summer registering African-Americans to vote and run for office in Copiah County. His journals tell tales that sound as if they were ripped from the pages of "To Kill a Mockingbird," including one incident he and some other lawyers experienced on the steps of a small courthouse:
"In the course of the next few seconds, we were called 'white n---s,' 'n--r lovers' and a few other names unworthy to print. I was amazed by all of this and couldn't help looking over at them. The expressions on their faces mirrored an intense hatred of us personally, and of everything we stood for. Even the small children seemed to wish us dead. It made me feel ill to know that there were people in America who differed very little in my judgment from those who manned Auschwitz in 1944."
I thought of Dad when I heard about what happened at a polling place in North Philly on Election Day 2008. Some militants of the New Black Panthers went to a polling place near the old Richard Allen Projects and strutted their stuff, complete with uniforms and billy clubs. Their clear intent was to intimidate people exercising their right to vote in what many called a historic election.

Peel he skin off them (nice thought!!) and all racists are the same underneath, regardless of color - angry, xenophobic, parochial, hostile, fearful ignorant - and stupid.
I just hope Christine is white. If not, she is in for hard times in Philly.
Good for her. A good article. I did write to KYW new tipline a few days ago. With “newsflash - voter intimidation” in the subject line. Of course I went on to explain te situation as of today.
Response? Crickets.
Typical Philly. Don’t care or too afraid. I don’t have time for either.

Go to ElectionJournal.com for all the breaking news on this story. This is where FOX NEWS is getting their inside stuff. More to come on these racist clown. The one is a member of Philadelphia Democratic City Committee and holds a current poll watcher’s certificate.
...Come on, give the POTUS a Break. He just endorsed a CRACKER A$$HOLE for Re-election...(-%
We also had in 1960 a government that was dedicated to wiping out the sin of racism and stood up for what was right. It would not tolerate the hate. It prosecuted those who advanced it. If President Obama and AG Holder are men of God, they won't tolerate it either. If they are not, they will sit idle and do nothing. It is in the bad times (not the good) when the true character of mankind is made public.
Unless the current administration condemns this behavior, we can assume it supports it. Then we, as a nation, must decide if we will tolerate it — on either side. There are so many inconsistencies in the current approach, they cannot be enumerated. It clearly says that at the end of the current age, evil will be called good and men will be left to flounder in their madness.
Until it can be proved, beyond any doubt, that people of color will tolerate this and do nothing, that Muslims will tolerate terrorism and racism and do nothing, I will reserve my own judgment about where we are on the time line. I suspect, having been so down-trodden and bereft of moral clarity within the community for so long, this speech has yet to reach those who would condemn it and if they do hear of it, they are unused to the concept and it will take them a while to get their courage up and take care of the problem.
Our nation will rise or fall on the basis of how many are willing to stand tall as men and women of God and character, who with moral clarity can say with one voice, “We aren't going to take this anymore and, more importantly, do something to make certain we don't have to. If all I hear is crickets, then I will assume the worst and ask that the last person out, switch off the lights -- oh, wait, they'll have gone out already.”
Obama and Holder appear to be in "Don't get mad, get even" mode.
Thanks for the ping.
SOUTHERNERS AS NAZIS...CAN ANY YANKEE RESIST THE IMPULSE..LOL
Bull Conner is alive and well, living in the body of one "Eric Holder". Racism with all it's ugliness and hatred lives... just the colors have changed.
oh please...I grew up in the middle of it in Mississippi early 1960s...it was fear of black behavior and black political power...hardly hatred.
some may have hated the agitators and freedom riders but most southerners were friendlier with blacks then than even now maybe....the reverse hostility was much much much less palatable...they feared interracial marriage too but they did not hate blacks...that is absurd.
we lived in and around majority or near majority black populations and dealt with black people as a major part of our lives...something few non deep southerners (outside Detroit) have a clue about
Time will tell. In the meantime, pray for our nation — every single person: man, woman, child — whether here by birth or circumstance that we get it right — it was the closeness and family ties that first brought this nation together under God. We are all so diverse now, it will take our Heavenly Father to bring us together to make it work now.
look at yourself....with no provocation whatsoever you let loose with your own anti-white, anti Southern bigotry....Miss High and Mighty
freepers like you live to promote these self serving myths about the evil South yet resort to your own bigotry with comments about rural whites as in-bred by default as casually as you drop a fart in private
are you even aware of your own hypocrisy?
this is a head's up: simply declaring racism or bigotry on this forum and then preening about how damn noble you are no longer sinks ships here and most of us don't run in fear from it
so kiss my Dixie butt lady...you and your ignorance about the South have no place in conservatism but a ready seat at the Obama-Holder table whenever you like..so get going don't be late and tell Shabbazz I'll be waiting when he comes to kill "Cracker babies"
Bump for Barry and his bros in the New Black Panther party.
The expressions on their faces mirrored an intense hatred of [me] personally, and of everything [Dad and I] stood for. Even the {young interns] seemed to wish {me] dead. It made me feel ill to know that there were people in America who differed very little in my judgment from those who manned Auschwitz in 1944 [and who I work with day in and day out]."
