Big union backs Murray(Senator Patty Murray(D)Washington State)

The Service Employees International Union, both a force for social justice and a devil figure for the political right, is endorsing the re-election of Democratic Sen. Patty Murray.

SEIU has more than 100,000 members in Washington, a work force that includes hospital, home health and nursing home workers as well as child care workers, security officers and janitors.

"Thanks to Senator Murray's leadership, our patients will have access to the health care they need, and for so many of my patients, that's a life saving difference," said Susan Tekola, a nurse at Harborview Medical Center and SEIU #1199 activist.

Seeking a fourth term, Murray holds one of 12 Democratic Senate seats (along with five Republican-held seats) considered "at play" in the 2010 election. Republicans in the U.S. Senate helped recruit two-time Republican gubernatorial nominee Dino Rossi as a front-rank challenger.

SEIU has held a high profile so far in the 2010 elections.

It was a big supporter of the Democratic primary challenge to Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, faulted for working to pare back health care reform. Lincoln was able to make an issue out of out-of-state unions, and narrowly won reelection.

Unlike long-established (and declining) industrial unions, SEIU has signed up members in low-wage occupations, and campaigned that those who clean patients and clean floors deserve to be paid decently and treated with dignity.

Wouldn’t this be just about as the same as ACORN endorsing a candidate? Maybe the New Black Panthers should endorse this Dim!

I’m just wondering when the unions kill all jobs where they’ll get their dues ... just because a manufacturing company employs union workers if there’s no work because people are taxed out of existence and have no money to purchase anything other than food, maybe some clothing and housing. That’s what it will all come down to.

I really believe the majority of union members are not “willing” members, especially teachers, public employees. They are trapped into joining these unions, the new union push is towards hispanics and the jobs they occupy. If a public employee tries to “opt” this employee is hassled by union stewards etc.

Wow. Even I am surprised at how openly partisan the Seattle P-I now is in its articles.

Then, again, the P-I went exclusively online because a few years ago it's readership comprised onhy a couple of hippy communes in suburban Seattle. Guess they're free to write whatever they please. Who cares how biased they are, no one normal reads it anymore.
