Immigration Truly 'Above Politics' Will Give U.S. Century-Long Edge
IBD Editorials ^ | July 7, 2010 | CARLOS M. GUTIERREZ

If we can fix our immigration system and design it for economic prosperity, our country will have a competitive advantage that can last a century!

Yet, I am deeply concerned, after listening to the president's July 1 speech, that this administration will squander the opportunity for a great American victory by using immigration for partisan political purposes.

The president's approach to immigration reform sounded disappointingly tactical and opportunistic: put more "boots on the ground" at the border; convince fellow Hispanics to vote for Democrats by continuing to promise reform and blame the lack of any progress on Republicans.

Ironically, he emphasized the need to be "above politics" and not allow "special interests to hijack the process."

Having been intimately involved in the 2005 Immigration Reform effort with Secretary Michael Chertoff, then secretary of homeland security, and a bipartisan group of senators, including the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, I can state that failure to pass the bill was the fault of both Republicans and Democrats. Immigration reform is a complex and intricate issue that demands compromise from both parties.

The president promised Hispanic-Americans during his presidential campaign that he would "reform immigration" during his first year in office. However, it was evident by the content of his speech — his first major address on the subject — that this will not get done any time soon.

As ALWAYS Obama states the OPPOSITE of what he MEANS.

There is no irony there.

Translation:

I will make immigration and POLITICAL ISSUE and NOT allow LAWS, REPUBLICANS or anyone else, disrupt my goal to ruin America and keep thugs in power. ILLEGAL immigrants will translate to votes for ME and who ever else FOLLOWS ME in POWER.

This garbage is nothing but a giimick and neverending cycle.......ask Reagan........=.=

Democrats have already hijacked the immigration debate by saying the system is “broken.” Actually, it isn’t. All the federal government has to do is enforce existing laws on the books, and return immigration to the levels and European/Asian countries prior to Kennedy’s 1965 act.

I couldn’t get past the first sentence of his rant.

Our Country already was designed for prosperity. Too bad Obama and his illegal invaders and minions are tearing it all down.

Immigration reform? How about taking a much closer look at those we're letting in legally, and if they have something to offer, expedite their paperwork.

As far as illegals are concerned, no amnesty in ANY sense, not ever, NEVER.

Not only do we not need these people, they are corrosive to our economic system and to our society.

So where are the HIGH TECH jobs going?

“Reforming our legal immigration system means dealing with two key issues: (1) designing a temporary and seasonal immigration system that meets the immediate needs of our economy and (2) creating a permanent immigration system that strengthens our communities and our country's long-term competitiveness.

Temporary workers initially enter the United States for one to three years for specific jobs where no U.S. workers are available. However, the current system is inflexible, complicated and so bureaucratic that it almost encourages the employers to bend the rules.

One of the most common complaints among businesses relates to the H-1B visa. This is a three-year permit (one renewal) for highly educated and/or highly skilled workers and is used extensively by the high-tech industry.

The annual quota is 65,000. During better economic times, that quota filled in days. In 2009, in the midst of the great recession, the quota filled in about seven months, suggesting the number of visas is still insufficient to meet employer needs.

Democrats claim this is another example of “big business” importing “cheap labor.” Meantime, more R&D centers are moving overseas, threatening U.S. dominance in critical fields such as information technology and medical research.”

So ou HIGH TECJH jobs are going to the h-!B visa - foreigners that will work CHEAP!

NOTICE how it is not a problem for UNIONS to pick up ILLEGALS for CHEAP LOABOR. No! They WANT the ILLEGALS so they can “protect” them as the next victim group. It's no longer the white, or blacks - NOW it is about recruiting the ILLEGALS.

A little self-racism at work there, Senor?

Immigration should be about one thing, and one thing only, making America a better, richer, more powerful nation while not destroying our Constitution, culture and liberties. Before we can talk about immigration in a way that benefits America first, we have to get rid of the anti-American scum in Washington.

If mass immigration is so good why doesn’t Mexico have any? Instead of exporting their entire population to the US maybe they should do the reverse and begin importing by the millions. Then they’ll be an economic powerhouse the entire century.

He can do it in a matter of minutes with an Executive Order, & that is what I expect from the Kenyan Imposter in the Oval Office any day now.

"How about taking a much closer look at those we're letting in legally, and if they have something to offer, expedite their paperwork.

I think this is what the author is saying in the article. The Dems say "Comprehensive" but they don't mean it - they just mean "Amnesty". He makes many good points about improving our immigration policies in ways that would benefit our economy and our future. The author is calling the bluff of the Dems assertion that they want "comprehensive" reform - they want nothing of the sort - they just want amnesty.

As far as illegals are concerned, no amnesty in ANY sense, not ever, NEVER."

I think this should be the default position. We should be negotiable on temporary work permits, even perhaps upping the allowable numbers of immigrants, or limiting the sanctions on illegals who've not broken other laws.

But . . .

Illegal entry into the country should always and forever preclude the possibility of obtaining full US citizenship.

That is the only way to break the cycle of people shunning the rules and waiting for the next "amnesty cycle."

Huh? You better have your eyes checked. IBD isn't the author of the article

The question of how to design an effective legal immigration system for the 21st century is less politically attractive for Democrats. For instance, the president said little about reforming our temporary worker programs or other programs for future immigration.

Gutierrez is nothing but any open borders advocate (who won't use the proper term) and a racist who wants to see more of his kind come to the US in massive numbers. He apparently thinks the current legal immigration quotas which allow 1.2 - 1.5 million immigrants and refugees annually are much too low, just woefully inadequate for his purposes.
