Hmmmmmmm.......Buy the cheap knock off of a cheap Russian fighter with no relevant combat victories?

Why?

I wouldn’t trust a Chinese TOY airplane, much less a real one!

Note the Chinese aren’t trying to make the jet engines out of their cheap inferior metal, they are trying to buy them.

They aren’t entirely stupid, they are entrepeneurs.

Whatever the Chinese make, they cut corners, if it is a four step process they will do it in three, if the plans call for .25 inches metal, it will be .20.

Buy 500 of them and put them on CAP along the southern border : price 5 billion.

Who needs a front line fighter to perform border patrol duties?

Aviation is one place you DO NOT want to cut corners. Mostly because any weak part of the plane could result in a crash.

Interestingly, Chinese copies of the MiG-19 (Shenyang J-6) proved to be a formidable fighter, mostly because of the powerful cannon armament. The North Vietnamese Air Force had a small number of MiG-19's which they operated with great success, but somehow the NVAF liked the maneuverability of the MiG-17 and the speed of the MiG-21 better (the MiG-17 had one major weakness, namely that if you engage "reheat" (afterburner) mode it was a sitting duck for any heat-seeking missile).

Since the Pakistani AF are facing the prospect of a lot of really modern planes in the Indian AF, I think they may end up buying quite a lot of this fighter:

Chengdu J-10

Otherwise, the Pakistani AF will be a sitting duck for the large number of Sukhoi Su-30MKI and later Sukhoi/HAL FGFA advanced fighters.

The reason why it is cheaper to build a plane in China than in Russia is because kickbacks for weapons contracts can account for 30 percent to 50 percent of the total cost.

It’s not really a Russian knock-off. It started out as a JV between the PRC and Grumman in the mid-80s.

That’s right! I remember that now - thank you.

But still, the Chicoms don’t really design anything of their own from whole cloth - they piece together technology stolen from others. That’s just how China does things - at every level.

You can easily see elements of the F-16 in there as well as the MiG.

HAHA!!

as China’s new fighter jet seems to be a cheaper imitation of the Russian original.
