American white pelicans, blue-winged teal and long-billed curlews are enjoying the Montana summer, but their wintering grounds are threatened by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Wildlife managers on the Gulf Coast are already scrambling to prepare for the arrival of millions of birds that will start leaving their northern breeding grounds as early as this month. They include Montana species like the piping plover and sandpipers, followed by scaups and blue-winged teal in August.
Since the undersea well blew out April 22, 130 miles southeast of New Orleans, oil has been pouring into the Gulf of Mexico at between 35,000 and 60,000 barrels a day. It's soiling approximately one football field-sized patch of coastal wetland every 30 minutes.
Many mallard ducks and other Montana waterfowl either don't migrate all the way to the Gulf, or head southwest to wetlands in California or Utah. Songbirds like the Townsend's warbler fly over the Gulf but don't touch the water.

It saddens and hurts me to see all those animals, birds or whatever soaked in oil. One thing it should prove to PETA and
the other whackos is that animals are not the super intellectual, smarter than humans creature they say they are.. If they were they would not get in the mess to start with. JMTC
If we quit using oil and spend every cent we have left in the treasury collectively to save ducks, will our souls be saved by Howard, the blue winged god of all that is good?
BP has announced that they will no longer hire Cajuns to help with the cleanup.
Seems they had hired three, Thibodeaux, Boudreaux, and Hebert. Told them to clean as many pelicans as fast as they could.
By noon, Thibodeaux had clean and gutted 56, while Boudreaux prepared the roux and Hebert boiled the rice.
2) What does Paul McCartney have to say about this?
3) Any complaints from or about these birds are racist.
I wonder if they will put a fence up for that? Have DHS turn the birds back.
Or perhaps, detour signs....or maybe, just maybe, the birds will figure it out.....
Thanks for the laugh...
