Frustration mounts for Jindal during tour of Grand Isle

GRAND ISLE, La. -- Hurricane Alex didn't hit Louisiana, but its outer bands caused rough seas and plenty of rain in southeastern part of the state, impacting oil spill response efforts.

Gov. Bobby Jindal was out on the water Thursday checking on Grand Isle.

“You can see literally this is some of the oil we just literally have gotten out of the water in the pass. We’re over 70 days after the explosion. There’s nothing in these passes to stop this oil coming right in from Barataria Bay,” Jindal said.

Just east of Grand Isle, Jindal watches oil flow through the pass into Barataria Bay. Calmer waters in the bay did allow operations to resume to line up 21 barges across the area, forming a 2,200 foot long oil barrier with vacuum trucks stationed on the barges to suck up the pollution.

But that reminded Jindal of the continual fight with federal bureaucrats for permission to use rock barriers to help stop the oil.

“We’d much rather fight this oil on the rocks, on the barges, on the outer perimeter on our barrier islands,” Jindal said. “And what is frustrating is they just don’t get it in Washington. They don’t get the sense of urgency. They need to get in this war to win it. It is ridiculous when they think rocks in the water are more dangerous than oil. It has been over a month now. And we need a greater sense of urgency. The federal government needs to either lead, or get out the way.

But a short distance away, when he saw the oil turning marsh grass black and killing it on the bay side of East Grand Terre Island, the governor’s irritation at federal delays turned to anger.

“I want the bureaucrat that’s telling us they’re worried about rocks in the water to come see this oil in these wetlands. I want them to come smell it, touch it; I want them to come back here day after day and watch this cane die. I want them to see these wetlands that are so important not only for the marine life, but also to protect us from future tidal surge,” Jindal said.

Just before the governor’s tour, Grand Isle leaders held a news conference to stress one of the things that they think could be vital to the economic health of the island: replacing on July 24 the Tarpon Rodeo with Island Aid 2010, a festival to raise funds for Grand Isle.

“We have Three Dog Night, Doug Kershaw, Amanda Shaw, Little River Band, The Wiseguys. So we’ve got a great lineup, two stages, lots of local food – seafood too,” said Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts.

“So you can launch your boats in the marinas and go fishing. So the restaurants still have fresh seafood. Some of the shrimp are coming in, some of the areas are open. So we have that little bind that’s open again that people can come back and enjoy. So it’s very important for the people to come support us," Grand Isle Mayor David Carmadelle.

Island Aid 2010 takes place Saturday, July 24. It starts at 10 a.m. and tickets are $10

Jindal needs to take the bull by the horns and do what’s necessary to clean up the shore regardless of BO/BS.

Well... one should never take the LORD’S name in vain... but since you did... well... I agree.

Unfortunately, God is also damning us here in the US at the same time.

Yes, I would have to agree with that. Not only are we in tough times, we are headed for even tougher times as I can see it.

I know I should not, LLS, but it is very hard for me to contain my anger towards this person Obama. I am weak in that regard. I am also honest though, and that is what I wish He would do.

Please forgive me, Lord.

How much damage can he do to Americans before his time runs out?

Ma’am, I may be the wrong person to ask that particular question.

My personal belief is that our time will run out before his does.

I believe that Barack Hussein Obama is Lucifer in the flesh, and I believe that he will bring unspeakable misery and suffering.

Something tells me that GOD does understand. I hope he forgives me too... for I agree with you.
