EDITORIAL: Just say no to Uncle Joe Stalin--National D-Day Memorial honors a communist monster
The Washington Times ^ | June 30, 2010 | Editorial

Josef Stalin had nothing to do with the June 6, 1944, Normandy invasion, yet a bust of the Soviet dictator is being given a place at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va. This is an unearned and indecent honor for a man who is remembered as one of history's greatest mass murderers. The memorial to this communist should be removed.

The mission of the National D-Day Memorial Foundation is to "commemorate the valor, fidelity and sacrifice of Allied participants in the invasion of Normandy." Soviet troops played no role in the D-Day invasion, thus it is inappropriate for the Soviet leader to be given a place of honor there. Stalin's defenders argue that the Soviet Union played a critical part in defeating Hitler's Germany and that the bust is an appropriate acknowledgment of that role without being an endorsement of anything else Stalin did.

By that flawed logic, however, every battle memorial should honor every leader involved in the war. Stalin's visage could grace scenes of American triumphs from Bastogne to Iwo Jima. For comparison, the Stalingrad battle monument in Russia doesn't feature a likeness of President Franklin Roosevelt or British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, nor should it. There is a tribute to the "Big Three" leaders in the city's central square, but it commemorates the 1945 Yalta Conference, not the critical 1942 battle. More to the point, the city that had borne Stalin's name is now known as Volgograd.

Stalin was only became an ally when it became obvious that Germany wasn’t going to share its plunder with Russia but prey upon Russia as well and he definitely had nothing to do with Normandy.

Exactly! How they make a connection to D-Day is beyond me and why should we honor him when billions view him as a mass murderer.

Ignorant.
Stalin was getting his ass KICKED and was pushing hard for a second front in the west to give him some relief. As “allies” we supplied them trucks, aircraft, and lots of food. In return, the Soviets declared war on Japan right before the surrender in Tokyo bay to take control of northern islands of Japan.
We should have NEVER helped those damn commies.
They forked us over during the war, then we had to fight their fighter pilots in Korea, then their advisors in Vietnam. All the while, we were shipping them wheat and other grains. Should have let them frikking starve.
I have NO tolerance for communists, foreign or in the house at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

According to the experts in “democide” (the purposeful killing of civilians by governments for any reason), Hitler’s regime is responsible for some 20,000,000 civilian deaths (about 6 million of which were Jews, the rest mostly Poles and Ukrainians).

Stalin, in his much longer reign of terror, killed well over 50,000,000 civilians on purpose.

What planet exactly do those who want to put up the statue of Stalin come from?

A very good question. They definitely can’t be sane but unfortunately we have many leftists and anti-Americans here that are not sane.

Stalin actually triggered WW2, giving the National Socialists the OK to invade Poland and divide it with him. He hoped to turn Hitler loose on the Western democracies. The man was a monster responsible for torturing and killing millions. Soon after WW2, he turned the N. Koreans loose on his erstwhile allies (that's us).

An article on the D-Day memorial website about the artist and the bust. It gives background on the bust. The artist worked to depict the monstrous nature of the tyrant. The bust is not to honor Stalin by any stretch of the imagination.

The link is down right now. I wonder if the server is flooded, or if it’s turned off at night.
