Time runs out for 1.2 million on unemployment

With her unemployment benefits coming to a halt, Miriam Cintron is forced to make a difficult choice between health insurance and daily expenses.

Signing into her unemployment benefits account last week, the New Yorker was horrified to see she hadn't received any money for three weeks, she says.

What would the four-year cancer survivor do if she couldn't afford to pay her $650 monthly COBRA payment? Her health insurance helped pay for life-saving treatment before, so giving it up is not an option, she says.

When Cintron was laid off from her job as a case worker at a homeless shelter in late 2008, she never imagined she'd go on unemployment. But even with 17 years experience, she's been unable to land a new job.

Here's a suggestion, you mutt: Why don't you quit wasting money dying your hair an unearthly color and get serious about joining the productive workforce.

Do some folks need some assistance while they look for work? Sure. But when you hit 18 months and have NOTHING, you're part of the leisure class.

Looks like the homeless industry isn't hiring right now, so go get a job cleaning hotel rooms, or washing dishes, or any of the other 12 million jobs out there that the mexicans and various other illegals are doing.

I wonder if she has a rent control apartment? I hope she finds a job but lots of people voted for this.

Unemployment was never meant to be a lifetime entitlement. I wonder how aggressive she's been in her "job search." She could start by washing out the kool-aid from her hair, clean up and hit the job-hunting full-time.

Life sucks get a helment already .... 18 months? TOO MUCH.

Women: To put this absolutely brutally and honestly you have two choices: You either make the $$$ yourself (which this woman is NOT doing), or you F#$% someone with the $$$ (and she's not doing that either apparently).

The economy must have workers producing, period.

It will all grind to a halt if we continue on this course of making unemployment payments a continuing entitlement.

All she’s done for 17 years is to enable the homeless, a net drain on society.

The cessation of unemployment for those unemployed for years is a jobs stimulus.

It forces them to get off their asses

Starvation is a highly underrated motivator

“Signing into her unemployment benefits account last week, the New Yorker was horrified to see she hadn’t received any money for three weeks, she says”

This is exactly why it is a bad idea to extend unemployment benefits! She went three weeks not knowing her benefits had ended.... Want to bet she takes any job she can now. The other problem with a lot of these people is they can make more money from unemployment than they can working a minimum wage job. Wanna bet she has a nice TV and the latest cell phone available!

So she didn't have a real job back then either.

The way I see it is that since she still has furniture, cat pillows, money for bad dye jobs, an internet connection (use the public library for job hunting) she has not yet sold all of her stuff and cut back as she needs to. When her apartment is left with the bare essentials then we can talk.
