Gov. Chris Christie calls for Republican Party rebranding

By: Maggie Haberman and Ben Smith June 30, 2010 05:06 AM EDT

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday in an interview with POLITICO outlined a path for the GOP to rebrand as the party keeping "our eye on the cash register,” while also praising some Democrats for taking the right approach to tackling major issues like education.

Christie, a darling of conservatives after staring down Democrats over the budget and tax cuts, demonstrated his own distinct brand of conservatism over a breakfast interview. Without naming names, the seven-year former federal prosecutor took a shot at politicians who simply resort to “demagoguery” on controversial - and complex - topics such as illegal immigration.

The sit-down came hours after the newly-minted governor returned home from passing the Garden State’s budget, a plan that mostly reflected what he’d spent months pushing for, but one that also cost him some of his popularity in the polls.

Christie has generally avoided talking about national issues in his first six months in office. But he urged President Barack Obama to take the lead on immigration reform, and said he should keep speaking out on teachers union reforms, an issue that has made the New Jersey governor a controversial figure as he’s aggressively fought for changes in his home state.

But he also took positions more closely aligned with some centrist Democrats on issues such as immigration – an issue he said falls victim to “demagoguery” too easily and one that’s a national problem.

I don’t think we have that long. I look to see this amnesty happen sooner than you think.

Perhaps even before the 2010 elections.

Who’s talking about staying home?

I think most here are saying forget about Christie winning the republican nomination.

He is pro amnesty. His famous quote about illegals not being
criminals says it all.

He is week on the 2nd amendment.

He just signed a budget that included 100 million for windmills. On energy he has no clue.

Christie has no chance at the nomination in 2012 (I believe him when he says he doesn’t want it anyway.)

So tell me who can beat Obama that has a chance in 2012?

If you say Sarah - fine, I am on board and will walk over hot coals for her 24/7. She is my first choice now and forever.

However, if she chooses not to run, tell me who.

The way to offer them citizenship is to send them back to their own country and let them apply for entry legally.

Nope. If they go back on their own, OK. But if we have to "send" them back, they should be permanently ineligible.

There’s a bunch of them out there with potential.

I like Christie here in NJ.

Ryan,Jindal,Demint,Daniels are some that I have my eye on and of course none of them are perfect either.

In 2012 though being pro-amnesty and anti-energy is a deal breaker.

In talking to some Ecuadorians visitors here last weekend, they have problems with Columbians sneaking into their country. She was complaining about the kidnappings for ransom. I told her it sounds like a worse version of Phoenix.

The same ole problem, the West vs the East on immigration.

Politicians from the left coast have no idea what a nightmare illegal immigration is.

The left coast pols should shut their pieholes until they have spent at least a month on one of these dangerous borders.

“I’m disappointed that Christie appears to be a social liberal.”

Yea - it’s a bummer - he could just keep quiet about the issue, if he’s pro-amnesty - but he REALLY seems to think that amnesty has to be part of the solution.

But, as long as he’s the gov in NJ, it is a TOTAL BLAST watching him - he really seems to be enjoying the job.

I commend you and Mike-zed for your ideological purity. Unfortunately that doesn’t translate into winning elections and passing legislation. If we keep branding every conservative who disagrees with us on 2 out of 50 issues as a RINO then we deserve all we get. Ever wonder why the left never uses the term DINO to describe those who disagree with them? Think about it...

Russ,

Being for Amnesty for illegals isn't just some 'small' or 'trifling' issue of disagreement. If you were to legalize the 20 million plus illegals here in the United States (that 12 million illegals estimate goes back to the year 2000), then you can forget about any Republican, RINO or Good Guy, ever being elected President and also forget about any GOP controlled congress. The Rats will have a permanent majority in Congress and a lock on the White House if Amnesty is allowed to happen. That is just the political damage from an Amnesty. Amnesty will destroy this country as we know it. Think about it...

Also, Christie isn't a big fan of either the 2nd or 10th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. He has always been for gun control and also his slamming of Arizona shows that he obviously isn't a lover of states rights or the 10th amendment, either.

Those are very 3 big issues that Christie is on the wrong side of, not minor disagreements. I do love his economic/budgetary policies big time, but other than that, he is just a typical northeast Liberal Republican. This is likely the real reason Christie won't run for President. Christie is smart enough to know his stance on Amnesty, Gun Control and States Rights issues will not win him many votes outside of New Jersey.

Actually, they do use the term DINO on places like DU. Less often, because the Marxists usually tow the line unless they run into an electoral loser issue like gun control in the world outside of the Northwestern faculty lounge.

Amnesty is not a 2 of 50 issue. It’s a 48 of 50 issue. If amnesty is the price of winning elections, I’d prefer to let the Republic die. Because amnesty is fatal to the rule of law and the American Experiment
