Gov. Chris Christie calls for Republican Party rebranding

By: Maggie Haberman and Ben Smith June 30, 2010 05:06 AM EDT

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday in an interview with POLITICO outlined a path for the GOP to rebrand as the party keeping "our eye on the cash register,” while also praising some Democrats for taking the right approach to tackling major issues like education.

Christie, a darling of conservatives after staring down Democrats over the budget and tax cuts, demonstrated his own distinct brand of conservatism over a breakfast interview. Without naming names, the seven-year former federal prosecutor took a shot at politicians who simply resort to “demagoguery” on controversial - and complex - topics such as illegal immigration.

The sit-down came hours after the newly-minted governor returned home from passing the Garden State’s budget, a plan that mostly reflected what he’d spent months pushing for, but one that also cost him some of his popularity in the polls.

Christie has generally avoided talking about national issues in his first six months in office. But he urged President Barack Obama to take the lead on immigration reform, and said he should keep speaking out on teachers union reforms, an issue that has made the New Jersey governor a controversial figure as he’s aggressively fought for changes in his home state.

But he also took positions more closely aligned with some centrist Democrats on issues such as immigration – an issue he said falls victim to “demagoguery” too easily and one that’s a national problem.

I’m glad you found it useful. I suppose we citizens are going to have to dig up more such charts to send out to the usual suspects.

Hard to believe, but we will have to demonstrate to these asshat politicians that you don’t open the front gates (while having a welfare state) when there are so many suffering behind our gates.

The immigration issue is about saving our American culture from a barbarian invasion!!!!

NO "amnesty"! DEPORT all illegals! Pass tough new immigration laws with national quotas that sharply restrict Third World immigration. Make assimilation of existing legal Third World immigrants a cornerstone of our social policy (i.e., English is our language).

Support Arizona! Let's have at least several other states pass Arizona-style immigration laws THIS YEAR, and give Barack Hussein obama a war with the states that he can only lose!!!!

Can you fill in the gaps? I like Christie’s approach to taking on the public employee unions.

I don’t think B.O. has been really taking them on—his rhetoric is B.S., just like his talk about deficit reduction and not raising taxes.

B.O., in fact, is a joke...and Christie should understand that simple fact.

Christie sounds like the darling of the liberal press, NOT conservatives. ‘Pubbies have proven since 2000 that they are anything BUT the “keepers of the cash register”!!

And Democrats and education . . . . !!??? Puh-leeeeeze!!

I totally agree with you about AZ and NJ...no comparison.

I'm disappointed that Christie appears to be a social liberal.

And to get at the END of the line of those already seeking a legal way in. I think it’s time to let more educated English, Irish and Scotish in, instead of lower educated third worlders. That way we won’t have to dumb down our schools more to accommodate them as we are now having to do.

If we keep branding every conservative who disagrees with us on 2 out of 50 issues as a RINO then we deserve all we get.

And, this is how we get so many RINOs in the Congress who keep agreeing with the leftists.

One party is supposed to be the majority party while the other is supposed to be the "loyal opposition". The reason that the 'Pubbies lost so clearly in '06 and '08 is because they had swerved so far to the left, most voters couldn't distinguish them from the Dems.

And, so far, the 'Pubbies have not effected any obvious course correction to resume their conservative roots or philsophy . . . . . they just keep swerving to the left so they can keep up with the Dems!!

If WE don't draw the line somewhere, THEY never will!!!

“This is a federal problem, it’s gotta have a federal fix,” he said. “I’m not really comfortable with state law enforcement having a big role.”

He said that without border security, enforcement of existing laws and a “clear” path to legalization for immigrants, there would never be a fix.

Goodbye, Mr. Christie.

Securing the border is merely lipservice from the GOP as well as the democrats.

Not any of these blockheads will acknowledge that the fix has already been established.

Close the damn border and enforce existing law.

If we insist on a 10/10 candidate who does not exist, obama gets 4 more years.

Christie to me is perhaps one of the only people who can really take the fight to ZERO on all levels.

The 10/10’ers and holier than thous are destined to give us 4 more years of Obama.

Sometimes I loathe the morons on “our side” as much as I do the left.

Just think if ZERO gets 4 more years and if Thomas, Scalia, or Kennedy retire?

Think about it long and hard before you prefer to sit on your rear end as opposed to getting someone like Christie in there.

Unfortunate, but considering the alternatives...

All due respect, but who needs more indoctrinated socialists?

Repeat after me: SUPREME COURT, SUPREME COURT, 5-4, 5-4,
5-4

While the amnesty thing to me is awful, I know 100% with Obama we will get amnesty,. With Christie, maybe its 50/50.

I’ll take those odds over Obama anyday.

Anyone sitting home in 2012 as a protest is just as bad as the worst communist/democrat as that is what they are aiding.

Amnesty is a deal breaker because it will cement the socialists in power.

3rd worlders are going to vote for democrats.

I am not disagreeing with you. However, you have more a chance to kill it with Christie there, like we did under Bush, than with Obama.

The SC is reason alone to vote for Christie and whoever the GOP nomniess is. For all his faults, GWB gave us Roberts and Alito.

The next 6 years could possibly see Kennedy and Scalia gone. Do you want Obama or Christie making those appointments?
