The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has so far awarded $1.44 million in federal funds to a project that, among other things, is estimating the size of the population and examining the “social milieu” of male prostitutes in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

“In Study 1, formative ethnography will be used to describe the settings, venues, and overall social milieu in which male sex work is being situated,” says the NIH abstract for the grant. “In Study 2, we will conduct a Capture-Recapture Survey to estimate the size of the male sex worker population in each city.”

The grant project began in July 2008 and is scheduled to run through March 2012. In fiscal year 2008, the NIH awarded the project $534,201 in federal funds. In fiscal year 2009, the NIH awarded the project $465,974; and in fiscal year 2010, the NIH awarded the project $442,340. So far, a total of $1,442,515 in federal funds have been awarded to the project.

The NIH abstract for the grant says the study of HIV infections in Vietnam has only recently begun to pay attention to “men who have sex with men.”

But we can’t extend unemployment benefits. Whatever. I hate them all, dems and repubs alike. Not much difference.

WHY do we care?

How dare they spend OUR money of perversion like this!

I've seen other “studies” where a few million are thrown at it like this ... what's Obama got in mind? Simply another way to waste money? Or is there a bigger agenda in studying perversion?

This story doesn’t say who is getting the funding. But it is a matter of public record:
Michael C. Clatts,AD Le M. Giang,B Lloyd A. Goldsamt,C and Huso Yi
Center for Research on Global Health and Youth at Risk, School of Public Health, University of Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Center for Research and Training on HIV/AIDS, Hanoi Medical University, Hanoi, Vietnam.
National Development and Research Institutes, Inc., New York, NY, USA.

This article gives an indiction of Mr. Clatts’ inclinations and interests.
Mr. Yi is developing international research collaboration on HIV prevention among at-risk groups in China and other Asian countries.

Le M. Giang lives and works in Vietnam. Why isn’t Vietnam funding this? Mr. Yi is developing international research collaboration on HIV prevention among at-risk groups in China and other Asian countries. Why isn’t newly affluent China paying for this? One of Mr. Goldsampt’s recent articles was entitled “Street careers: homelessness, drug use, and sex work among young men who have sex with men.” WHY IS MY HARD-EARNED TAX MONEY FUNDING THIS CRAP?

This begs the question, “What the....?” Must be Barry’s way of creating jobs.

Our tax dollars hard at work. And we wonder why we’re having a hard time financially.

So, 1.4 million of the American public worked hard, and contributed a dollar to this fund so we could study hookers...male hookers?

This is why I think we need a thirty percent cut on government spending...across the board. It’ll force the big guys to cut problems like this before it gets into the papers and makes us all look like fools.

And here’s the kicker...what professor is actually studying this and signs his name to this? Think about that.

They’re going to get aids (and other stuff), spread it to a lot of other people and then die.

Why do they need a study?

So why in heck are we spending American taxpayer dollars on the study of prostitutes in OTHER COUNTRIES?

Does this count as foreign aid?
