Indeed, he is a hero, and should be commended.
But, in fairness, it is generally accepted that allied governments eject (most) outed spies from friendly countries. He was doing good work ... but he wasn’t working for us. He’s not our agent, so our laws would typically apply as normal.
I would not necessarily object to him being allowed to stay — though allowing foreign spies to take residence in the United States is tricky for national security — but I don’t really object to him being sent back to Israel either.
He should be given a ticker-tape parade in Israel, though.
