National Review Endorses McCain in Primary

Arizona Sen. John McCain’s re-election campaign has gained an important endorsement from an influential conservative publication, National Review.

“This magazine has not always agreed with Sen. John McCain’s judgments,” the endorsement on National Review’s website notes. “But there are three considerations that militate against dumping McCain for his primary challenger, former congressman J.D. Hayworth.”

The first is that McCain has consistently voted on the conservative side on important issues — he has never supported a broad-based tax hike, voted for every conservative Supreme Court nominee, and has a long pro-life record.

Second, McCain has unmatched credibility on national security and demonstrated his leadership by encouraging the “surge” of American forces in Iraq.

Third, McCain has a better record than Hayworth on controlling federal spending. Hayworth in fact appeared in infomercials telling people how to get “free money” from the government, according to National Review, which concludes:

Its not going to be a two way debate. There are three candidates running for the Republican primary of the US Senate in AZ.

Not very informed are you.

I sure hope you’re right. But that has not been my experience in AZ. The old farts in the retirement communities have long and selective memories. They still think FDR saved the country from Hoover, and the dam is called “Boulder Dam.”

“You apparently have inside info on SLIM, so I can’t speak to that. But you voted for him?”

Yeah I did. How unRepublican of me s/ Project Slim was after he became Gov.

So, that conservative candidate is going to put on a huge TV campaign on par with McCain and Hayworth from here on out? I'm far better informed than you are if you think he will be able to have equal exposure and just as loud a voice in what is really a two way race.

And what percentage is Deakin polling???

Does it matter what Deakin is polling?

Hayworth broke a campaign pledge he made in 1994 over term limits. And he’s got the other two issues.

I’m not an old fart and I’m for McCain. Why if the Republican Party has a chance to overtake the US Senate he will become Chrm on very important committees.

During a campaign, I wouldn’t assume most people knew anything. My point is no one really wants Hayworth or they would be trying to sell his strengths to others. Personally, I find the insane hatred for McCain a bit off-putting. To win an election, you have to sell your candidate. I don’t see any selling around here.

Oh, wow, McCain has lied and flip/flopped so many times on border security and amnesty (which he never supported) that you really are barren of anything to say if you must reach back to 1994. And the other two issues are nonsense.

You have nothing to say worth hearing. You're just a McCain hack and you keep changing the subject and are a waste of time.

I guess I should have accepted that high paying job in the Symington admin I might still have a job but turned it down cuz there were dirty stuff involving him and project slim.

No, you were right. You'd have been canned years ago with the Napalitano regime coming to power, if not before, when Hull stepped in. Good rule of thumb: Never count on a politician for anything, especially your livelihood.

No, I said that about SLIM when you said it was about Salmon. You were correct later, it was Symington. And I don’t believe much of what was said about him anyway.....

To win an election, you have to sell your candidate. I don’t see any selling around here.

The sell is that Hayworth has the right position on most all the issues where McCain has the wrong positions. That's the way it is with most here at FR.

Are you for amnesty for illegals or against it???

Are you for cap and trade schemes or against them???

On and on. It is really pretty simple for most at FR. These two candidates are miles apart on some of the critical issues of today. It's not hard for most here to decide who they prefer. Unfortunately, the election will not be decided by a vote at FR, so your concern "I don't see any selling around here" is pretty irrelevant, and most here already know what they think and can't be "sold" anything on this race. - Your concerns really seem more relevant to those in Arizona with a chance to "sell" their viewpoint, which most of us are not.

I don’t either and I don’t believe in conspiracy theories. But there were people who mysteriously died before the Project Slim thingy went to court.

So you think your supposedly belief on the issues between the two candidates is more important than one who took a pledge and then reniged (sp)?

Personally, I find the insane hatred for McCain a bit off-putting.

If you were a conservative constituent of his, you wouldn't be so off-put. Sorry if you don't like AZ politics. As for me, I'd like to have a Senator who fights the liberals harder than he fights me, but then, that's just MHO.
