WSJ NEWS ALERT: Corruption Suspected in Airlift of Billions in Cash From Kabul
WSJ Email Alert ^ | 06/27/2010

Posted on 06/27/2010 5:01:55 PM PDT by Glenn

More than $3 billion in cash has been openly flown out of Kabul International Airport in the past three years, a sum so large that U.S. investigators believe top Afghan officials and their associates are sending billions of diverted U.S. aid and logistics dollars and drug money to financial safe havens abroad.

The cash -- packed into suitcases, piled onto pallets and loaded into airplanes -- is declared and legal to move. But U.S. and Afghan officials say they are targeting the flows in major anticorruption and drug trafficking investigations because of their size relative to Afghanistan's small economy and the murkiness of their origins.

Either its time to pull the troops out in Afghanistan or its time to permanently remove the Karzai brothers.....

notice how most of the money started ‘leaving’ Kabul in 2009. Karzai and his cronies see the writing on the wall. They will milk the USA cash cow until Barry pulls the troops out and then they will take off for the French Riveria to live out their remaining days in luxury, courtesy of the American taxpayer.

The Pakis are doing EXACTLY the same thing. King Barry tripled US aid to 1.5 Billion a year for 5 years. President 10% (Benazir Bhuttos hubby got the nickname because he reupetedly skimmed 10% of all aid to Pakistan when she was President in the late 80’s and early 90’s) will steal as much as he can while he can. The ISI and generals will get their share too. This racket has been going on for decades and we are fools to play along. Let the two countries go and the jihadis will probably kill off themselves in their quest for power.

Of course the Pakis have those pesky nukes, but if we leave and the jihadis take over, the Indians will deal with the problem for us.

Most of the funds passing through the airport are being moved by often-secretive outfits called "hawalas," private money transfer businesses with roots in the Muslim world stretching back centuries, officials say.

Wha'dya know, there's a tie-in to Islam.

BTW, I have found (no one seems interested in it) a company...dummy company...that the Feds use to pay out billions (it was 32 billion when I looked last) to a “Miscellaneous Foreign Contractor”.

I don’t care anymore. I think I spent several days downloading and making spreadsheets on it...but, what the heck. “They” can do what they please. Including and not limited to destroying the Gulf of Mexico. Neglect or on purpose, doesn’t matter anymore.

O.K. allot of bad reasons are possible.

But, I wonder how much of it is leaving the country for the possibly very legitimate reasons of (1) safety - harder to be lost through robbery in a foreign bank than in the very insecure environment of Afghanistan, together with (2) simple lack of trust in local banks. Someone could deposit the dollars in a local Afghan bank; but will it be there in that bank next week? (Notice the bulk of it IS declared in suitcase shipments from the Kabul airport.)

Maybe, just maybe, the locals - no matter who they are, no matter whether it’s their money or money they are responsible for - think the local banks are more “corrupt” and unreliable than everyone else.
