January 1, 2011 Changes to Over-the-Counter Eligibility for Reimbursement (Sig Heil Hussein)
Discovery Benefits, Health Care plans all over America ^ | 4/6/2010 et al | Discovery Benefits, etc.

On March 23, 2010 President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act...that includes changes to the classification of over-the-counter (OTC) drugs...

Under the new health care reform legislation, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, medicines and biologicals will be eligible for reimbursement only if the request is accompanied by a doctor's prescription. This means items such as cough medicines, pain relievers, acid controllers, diaper rash ointment, to name a few, will no longer be reimbursed unless there is a doctor's prescription submitted along with the reimbursement request

My emphasis is added.

If you have a FLEX PLAN, it just got less flexible, thanks to Hussein and the DEMON-RATS.

Below is a reproduction of what came in the mail to a friend of mine regarding HER flexible health care plan.

Love it. So now people will be going to the doctor or in my case the ER so that they can get an Rx for non prescription meds. This will of course result in tremendous cost savings cause doctors visits are free.....

I don’t see the problem here, for instant if I buy cough medicine down at the local Walmart, I never expecting my insurance company to reimburse me. I don’t have insurance right now, but at least I got the VA to depend on, but I’m not quiet sure about in the future though, but that’s another issue. But even when I did have insurance it didn’t cover stuff like this, and I’ve never have heard of any insurance to cover stuff like this unless it was some type of Government run welfare insurance program.

My husband’s company has said the same thing about our FSA. This really hurts us...we have 4 kids and we go through a lot of all sorts of OTC stuff, especially the allergy medicines. We don’t use the card for copays too much other than routine checkups, and we don’t have recurring prescriptions—we just get them for whenever someone gets sick around here.

So far, the company has calculated that Obamacare is going to cost them $16M. They employ about 8000 people, almost all in the U.S.

I told my husband to tell all his liberal coworkers they should really enjoy their FREE healthcare when the company drops them like a hot potato :)

So are you saying that before this change people could get reimbursement for these items? Is that for the people who reach a certain level of expenditures? All I know is I have never been able to deduct for such items.

I never knew we could get reimbursed for OTC stuff in the first place.

Yep, the Messiah Hussein and idiots like Chris Dodd and Chuck Schumer and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Barney Frank and Al Franken and Debbie Stabenow and Nazi Pelosi and Hitlery Clinton and Joe the Clown Biden WILL NOT NEED PRESCRIPTIONS for these things, nor will they CARE about getting prescriptions, because the TAXPAYERS OF AMERICA pick up their health care bills.

I detest this regime.

Flex care plans, if offered (like at my friend’s company) allow you to withold money tax free from your paycheck, like a 401(k).

Sometime during that year, if you spend $8 on a bottle of aspirin, and $12 on bandages, you can turn that in to the administrator of the plan with a receipt and get reimbursed. So your health care costs are tax-free. At least some of them.

Now Hussein the jerkweed is requiring participants to GET PRESCRIPTIONS for all O-T-C items....stuff you would run down to the pharmacy in the middle of the night and get if your kid has a cough or a runny nose.

Hussein is an idiot.

A Flex plan may be part of health insurance. Not all employers offer them. You se t aside money from your paycheck during the plan year on weekly basis to reimburse yourself out of pocket medical, dental, drug expenses. The cough medicine, prilosec etc, still cost you but you are using untaxed income now, thus if you are in 40% tax bracket whatever you reimburse yourself for, you are getting a 40% discount. If you dont use all the money you set aside, i believe it goes back to your employer. Obviously it is key to not set aside too much.

The article didn’t make it clear, i.e. misstated to issue.

Insurance companies never did reimburse for OTC medications.

The point here is that if you establish a Flexible Spending Account for your healthcare expenses (the amount of which you don’t pay income taxes), before, you could use it to pay for OTC meds, in addition to doctor’s visit or other out of pocket medican expenses. NOW you cannot use the money in your FSA to pay for OTC meds — this is just another form of increasing your taxes in a stealth way, without coming out and eliminating FSAs, just limit more and more what you can spend it on.

Won’t be getting paid? Currently we run 1/3 of our visits in the ER are “no pay”.

Thanks for the clarification. Sorry I didn’t make it clear in the beginning, folks.

Bottom line: Hussein is dictating how you spend your money. Welcome to fascism.

This isn’t about insurance coverage, it’s about HSA (Healthcare Savings Accounts).

Every week I have $75 dollars deducted from my check, before it is taxed, to be dumped in a savings account. During the year as I accrue medical expenses, I can submit my receipts to my plan caretaker for reimbursements. Because it is done with money that is “tax free”, the government has stipulated what items I can get reimbursed for.

The plan was designed to get more people paying for their own healthcare needs instead of turning to insurance for every tissue needed to wipe your nose.

This is an attempt by the Dems to tighten that process.

No, its money you set aside tax free from your income and use it throughout the year for medical expenses and if you don’t use it all in one year, you lose it. Our company let’s you set aside $3000 per year - we received this notice almost within one month the healthcare deform was passed. As a side note, anyone who puts their 25-27 year old child on their health insurance policies will have to pay tax on the cost of that premium (state and federal in my case) due to health deform. This truly hurts the middle class and disproved the theory that anyone making less than $250k won’t have taxes raised. I do and I will as of 01/01/11.

I’m waiting for them to slowly take away all over the counter drugs, so we will be forced to go to a government approved doctor to get a “prescription” for aspirin, or BenGay. Got to force us further up the narrowing chute, like stupid animals!
