MONROE, NC (WBTV) - A pair of store clerks shot and killed a gunman during an attempted robbery in Monroe late Thursday night, Monroe police said.
The two convenience store clerks reacted by pulling their own guns during the attempted robbery and exchanging fire with the suspect, police said.
The shooting happened at the Sunny Food Store located on Walkup Road at 10:17 p.m.
According to the Monroe Police Department, the suspect approached the two clerks in the store, displayed a gun and demanded money from the register.
During the robbery, both of the clerks in the store pulled out their own weapons. It's unclear at this point who fired the first shot or how many shots were fired, but police say shots were exchanged.
The suspect was hit at least once, and stumbled down the street before collapsing in the front yard of a house.
The suspect, 23-year-old Robert Christopher Young of Monroe, was found in front of 302 McIntrye Street, police said.
The clerks on duty, brothers Sophia Pich and Jesus Vergara, were not injured.
Monroe police officials said the suspect was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, but was pronounced dead by medical staff a short time later.
Hours later, police said they were called back out to the store again for a large crowd who had gathered. According to officers, they were family members of the suspect. The crowd was dispersed without incident.

Me thinks this is not over.
Note that the police had a mug shot of the perp which was taken while he was alive. He obviously had a history of unlawful behavior. Nice shooting and good riddance!
I can’t get enough of these happy ending stories. I think it’s because the receiving end is invariably a member of the liberal constituency.

The family dispersed, and went to meet with lawyers to see how they can sue Sonny’s, the 2 clerks, the Monroe PD and Monroe city govt. Then with the mortician.
Well, we know for sure, that the two clerks {brothers} both have guns.
It's probably safe to assume that their family members also have, and are not afraid to use guns.
If the perps crew is intent on revenge, they may get what their bad boy relative got.

Where I grew up in Queens, the Italian-American family that owned the local grocery store sold out to a family of Lebanese new comers after being repeatedly robbed. One day a brotha was hitting on one of the female cashiers. Her male relative at the next register told him to cut it out, the brotha told him to mind his own bidnizz. The male relative produced a 9mm pointed at the brotha's face. Da brotha promptly departed gasping and walking on his knees. Needless to say, the Lebanese never, ever got robbed.

What were they going to do? Protest that the clerks didn’t lay down and die for the gunman?
I expect the present administration will soon find a way to put the innocent people who earn money honestly in jail, and freely allow the people who vote democrat to just go in and steal everything that they want.

I wonder how many of these “returned fire” shooting occur in an average year. I would like to know the number of accumulated crimes of the dead perps. Just wondering.
They were upset at losing one of their breadwinners, and protectors against other predators. That's life in the inner city.
