The chatter in China, and military deployments, indicate that the leadership believes they are now able to take Taiwan by force, before the United States can intervene. Such an attack would have to be without warning, because the United States would put forces in the way if there was any indication that an invasion was imminent. This development comes as no surprise to those who have been watching military and political developments in China and Taiwan during the past two decades. At the end of the Cold War, China had three million troops on active duty, but their weapons, warships and aircraft were largely 1950s technology. They had no ballistic missiles aimed at Taiwan, because the only missiles China had were equipped with nuclear warheads and aimed at Russia. The Chinese navy had miniscule amphibious forces and little confidence that the Chinese air force could attain air superiority over the Taiwan Straits, so that they could get troops across.
Twenty years later, the Taiwanese navy has declined while the Chinese force has expanded and been modernized. The Chinese now have nearly as many modern aircraft as Taiwan, and Chinese pilots are much better trained. Amphibious shipping has been greatly expanded, as have airborne forces and army units trained for amphibious landings.
Perhaps the most important change since 1991 is China's force of precision guided missiles and rockets. China has built many, more accurate and cheaper, short range ballistic missiles. China has created a line of shorter range ballistic and cruise missiles meant for non-nuclear war. China has stationed over 1,200 short range ballistic missiles within range of Taiwan. All of these missiles can be launched in a short period of time, overwhelming Taiwan's small anti-missile defenses, and wrecking airfields, ports and army bases.

And Everyone at once! Thanks Bill!!!!!!!!!!!
This may have been true before 2008, but does anyone really believe that B.O. would make this move?
How’s that “free trade” thing working out so far?
First phase of the Chinese GPS System, BeiDou, has three satellites giving limited coverage to part of China, which by happenstance includes Taiwan and surrounding area....they don’t need ours, or the Russians’
B.O. won’t intervene nor will any future President.
China learned in the Korean War it could not defeat the US military even with overwhelming numbers of soldiers. In the 1980’s the Chinese set out on a 30 year plan to defeat the US economically. During the 1990’s and first decade of the 21st century the Chinese successfully gutted the US industrial base using US government “free trade” policies, manipulation of its currency, and subsidies to exporters to drive key manufacturing industries out of the United States and become the banker to an increasingly financially indebted America. In this decade it is focusing in on destroying the US financial system and the dollar as the world’s reserve currency.
China owns us. We cannot go into a protracted conflict with China because we do no longer have the industrial capacity to even clothe our armies and our population. If China embargoed exports of consumer and industrial goods to this country our economy would collapse in 90 days. Unlike 1941 we are not self sufficient in energy resources and we don’t have the manufacturing facilities to produce war equipment for a protracted conflict with a major power. Wal-Mart, Goldman Sachs, and the other companies doing business in China would stop any president from potentially damaging the China trade.
Like it or not we are a debtor nation and an economic servant of China. China will take Taiwan when it wishes and the US will do nothing more than make a few speeches in the United Nations. To move our carriers into position to defend Taiwan opens us up for humiliation. George Bush did nothing when the Chinese forced down an American reconnaissance plane in an act of aggression early in his first term. Obama won’t lift a finger if a Chinese submarine sinks a US carrier.
“Like it or not we are a debtor nation and an economic servant of China. China will take Taiwan when it wishes and the US will do nothing more than make a few speeches in the United Nations.”
So true. Chinese missiles are merely an ace-in-the-hole rather than the first line of attack. I think the Chinese are fully confident the U.S. will not intervene (especially this administration) regardless of how many strategic warning is given of an attack on Taiwan. Indeed, the Chinese have so stacked things in their favor, they probably have a 50:50 chance of Taiwan simply surrendering voluntarily rather than have their island annihilated in what is ultimately a futile effort to resist.
Churchill convinced the Brits to resist the German Battle of Britain, but only because he believed victory was possible. It’s doubtful he would have done so knowing victory was inevitable.
I foresaw this on the day that Obama was elected.
Weakness brings war.
The Chicoms will not miss the chance to take Taiwan.
Russia wants their empire back.
The muslims think they can take Israel out. Turkey has now switched sides. Iran will have nukes.
Be prepared.
They have their own Beidou GPS system.
