June 16: U.S. Central Commander Gen. David Petraeus testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, before the Senate Armed Services Committee. (AP)
A military source close to Gen. David Petraeus told Fox News that one of the first things the general will do when he takes over in Afghanistan is to modify the rules of engagement to make it easier for U.S. troops to engage in combat with the enemy, though a Petraeus spokesman pushed back on the claim.
Troops on the ground and some military commanders have said the strict rules -- aimed at preventing civilian casualties -- have effectively forced the troops to fight with one hand tied behind their backs.
The military source who has talked with Petraeus said the general will make those changes. Other sources were not so sure, but said they wouldn't be surprised to see that happen once Petraeus takes command.
I guess you support the Inquisition that went along with the extermination of the Cathars.
Of course, it took more than 100 years after Arnaud Amalric uttered Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius for them to hunt down and kill (burn) the last person who didn't believe what they wanted him to believe.
Effective, if not exactly efficient, timely, or moral.
Unfortunately, at the end of the day you have to fight the enemy on THEIR terms.
For an example a little closer to home in both geography and time, look into the USA, 1919, and the so called “anarchist summer”. People were blowing things up, blowing themselves up* - and yet it all ended. And it wasn't because we sat down and talked with anybody, or we tried to understand them, etc. Picking up the family of a dead anarchist, putting them on a boat, dumping them into a foreign country and saying, "stay the F out" was not timely or moral - but it damm sure worked!
*Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt (then Secretary of the Navy and pre polio) spent an evening picking glass out of the floor of their front room after an anarchist blew himself up across the street in front of the home of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
That person was right on the mark.
I am encouraged that Gen. Petraeus seemed to learn from mistakes he had made earlier. That's a good sign. Let's hope he takes the right course in Afghanistan.
Nearly all of those warrants were overturned as being illegal, weren't they? If I recall correctly, the bombings continued even after the raids & deportations (wasn't the Wall Street bombing the biggest up to that point) but then fizzled away as they got little reaction...and as they created that monster we had to fight from 1941-1945.
And, of course, Palmer looked like an overreacting fool.
And it hurts us today, just like the little boy who cried wolf.
Unfortunately, at the end of the day you have to fight the enemy on THEIR terms.
Only the fool fights fire with fire. The wise man fights fire with a fire extinguisher.
All that being said, I am taking issue addressing only the specific ways you put it. It could very well be that genocide is the answer (though I'm not so sure it is).
Think maybe he’ll quietly retract a few of the tough regs McChrystal enacted and let a few concessions back on the bases? Burger King, Pizza Hut et al?
I heard two reasons cited for removing them - one was that it slowed the transport of necessary lifesaving supplies to the troops out in the more dangerous areas, in which case I understand. The other “reason” cited was that it “wasn’t fair” to the troops out on the periphery because they didn’t have access. Which made no sense, but then that’s typical of this administration.
Ironicaly, General Custer won’t be able to find out, as he refuses to watch Fox News.
"American professor TarlEA Cabot Party is transported via a magical ring to planet Gor, where TheY must help an oppressed country overthrow its evil king and his barbarian henchmen."
I agree completely. Look at the recent statistics - the current ROE’s are one of the reasons why more of our troops have been killed. It really is an outrage and the new rules should go into effect ASAP.
That would be great.
Thanks for the ping!
...to make it easier for U.S. troops to engage in combat with the enemy, though a Petraeus spokesman pushed back on the claim.
TRUTH? Or more BS from the Government/Media complex?
In case you didn’t see it Ping.
I've been digging around at CentCom and found this.

What do you think happened between this first year report and the RS article, I don't have the dates of either, but will look for the time line.
The American president told me in confidence yhat he is a Muslim. said Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit after a recent one-on-one meeting with Obama.
Hell, anyone with a brain knows that by now...but it is interesting that an Egyptian would want to try and let that cat out of the bag. I wonder why.
That reminds me ~ is Yobama gonna let Fox News back on in the General's Lounge?
Very good news indeed!! Now let’s hope it’s TRUE!!
Amen, Mom...If it does turn out to be true it’ll be very good news, especially for all on the ground doing the heavy lifting. We’re all praying!
We need to stop kidding ourselves. McChrystal was taking orders from the very guy who canned him and from the very guy who replaced him.
He’s going to allow the troops to have Pizza Hut and McDonald’s again.
Before they go out to be cannon fodder for the Taliban.
The article doesn't say he's loosening the ROE, but that he's changing it.
