Petraeus to Modify Afghanistan Rules of Engagement, Source Says

Published June 25, 2010

| FOXNews.com

June 16: U.S. Central Commander Gen. David Petraeus testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, before the Senate Armed Services Committee. (AP)

A military source close to Gen. David Petraeus told Fox News that one of the first things the general will do when he takes over in Afghanistan is to modify the rules of engagement to make it easier for U.S. troops to engage in combat with the enemy, though a Petraeus spokesman pushed back on the claim.

Troops on the ground and some military commanders have said the strict rules -- aimed at preventing civilian casualties -- have effectively forced the troops to fight with one hand tied behind their backs.

The military source who has talked with Petraeus said the general will make those changes. Other sources were not so sure, but said they wouldn't be surprised to see that happen once Petraeus takes command.

exactly.

If we had nuked Falluja right after they hacked our soldiers to death, burned them, and hung them naked from that bridge, this war would have been over years ago, and 1000’s of US soldiers would not be dead now.

The terrorists would of been lining up in lines 50 miles long to surrender, within days of the bombing.

Ironically even fewer Iraq's would be dead, since supposedly millions have been killed over the years, while only a few hundred thousand lived in Falluja

I’m wondering if this was in McChrystal’s plan - to land Petraeus the job, putting Obama over a barrel so he’d HAVE to do what Petraeus demanded.

See post 95.

I would add that if he is concerned about troop morale and about Islamist website propaganda, he can say and do things in his confirmation process that in no way conflict with my advice that he be vague about ROE and other tactical issues until he is in theater. He can, for example, say something like, he has experience turning around a situation, and he will do what it takes to do the same in Afghanistan. He can point out that Al Qaida in Iraq thought the same thing in 2006. Things like that.

Agreed. Muzzies follow Islam, which is a political/religious ideology. They must be broken a million ways from here to Mars, and if that means nukes and sowing salt in the earth, then so be it.

Praying it is changed for the better and not the worse. If it’s worse than what Obama has already done...we need to start calling for our troops to come home imho.

Thanks for the ping!

Maybe they’ll be allowed to have a round chambered as they patrol.

Looked like McChrystal’s ROE was a big problem with the troops.

I don’t recall hearing that...and I agree it’s disturbing.

I don't think it was his plan to have his aides blabber to the Rolling Stone but he certainly can make the best of the situation!

Turn a fail into a qualified win - I'll take it.

It may have been Petraeus' idea when he heard about it.

It's funny, turning a crisis into a win. Using The Big 0's tactics against him.

Well, looks like he was big on these rules that Petraeus is now apparently going to change - same Impostor in Chief for both.

So killing the enemy will now be authorized?

Woah! Not so fast. The first change needs to be letting them put ammunition in their weapons. ;-)

I'm not sure we'll go even that far.

My sources tell me that - given the current political situation in Washington - permitting our troops to "fart in the general direction" of the enemy is about the best we can hope for.

On the bright side, when struck by an IED, I'm hearing that angrily shaking one's fist will soon be permissible.

If I recall correctly the softening of the ROE's were the ultra radical Obama and his administration's ideals and decision. It was said that the general Obama just fired was progressive left enough to adhere to this ridiculous order, this is precisely why he was hand-picked. A politically left leaning general thinks Obama was too radical and an idiot. How profoundly sad!!!

Something tells me Obama will not allow normal ROE's. Expect Obama to revise this call and return the ROE's so we lose and get more killed as it has been.

Obama wants terrorists read rights as well as he could care less that they use women and children as ploys to blow up many.

“My bet is that Petraeus used that leverage, demanding changes in the ROE or he wasn’t going to take that job.”

That was my first thought, too.

You almost have to wonder if McCrystal and Petraeus are in cahoots together.

The Osborn's lost their son in Afghanistan and blame the ROE's: http://wnyt.com/article/stories/S1623848.shtml?cat=300

FTA: Instead, these parents laid blame at the President's feet. "I think he's the wrong man for the wrong job at the time, and I think he has things backwards I think that it's a kind of a touchy feely approach to war and it doesn't work," Bill Osborn said. "We have to win the war first. The only way to do that is to have someone in charge who's a warrior, not a flower child," Beverly Osborn said.
