The executive editor of the National Enquirer says the Oregon masseuse who made a sexual allegation against Al Gore asked the tabloid for $1 million but that the Enquirer did not pay her or anyone else in reporting the story.
Barry Levine said in an interview Thursday that the woman offered to sell her account through her lawyer but that "no money exchanged hands" and the paper conducted only a brief interview with her.
The tabloid confirmed that Gore, who had just released the film "An Inconvenient Truth," was in Portland at the time of the alleged incident to give a speech on global warming.
The paper obtained the $540 bill -- including a 20 percent gratuity -- that the masseuse submitted to the Hotel Lucia, which retained her, along with her subsequent e-mail correspondence with the hotel.
Levine said he did not know whether the breakup of the Gore marriage prompted the masseuse to go public but that "you have to give her the benefit of the doubt."

The woman, who told police that Gore had requested an abdominal massage,”
That woman must have one strong stomach.
Now the entire nation is laughing at him.
Never heard of an abdominal massage before this, but Al Gore obviously did.

He has more troubles with his TV Channel!!!
CURRENT!!!! (looks like Al is being swept out to sea)
I was out with a few friends last night, and one person hadn't heard about it.
The biggest piece of this is that the media knew about it and chose to keep it under wraps. Their hypocrisy knows no bounds.
exactly...
Same here;)
Family member was too busy working - and the reaction was ewwww a female masseuse by herself with a male client!! My advice was to read the police report.
I truly believe Al thought he had hired a hooker - which is why he got angry and didn’t understand her questions!!
...front page of NYTimes
I’m pretty sure a lot of people don’t know about this story yet. I’ll have to ask my one sister-in-law who watches CNN...:)
Where the coin of the realm is information - insiders' knowledge (with strings) IS a bribe.
Great question...I'd like to know which newspapers put it on the front page and which magazines will put it on the cover.
