When I was in elementary school back in the ‘60’s we had to bring our shot records to school within the first couple of days to prove we had had all our shots.
If any if the kids weren't up to date they weren't allowed to attend until they had gotten them.

Don’t they still do that?

My son is 9 and at the beginning of last year I got one of "those letters". He was less than 3 weeks overdue for a booster. How is it that children who don't get immunized for personal or religious reasons can still go to public school?

It is still that way here. Kids can’t attend daycare, preschool, or elementary or high school without providing up-to-date shot records and physical.
