Okay, this was unexpected: Apple has acknowledged and responded to the reception problems people are having with their new iPhone 4, which seem to happen based on the way the phone is being held.
In short: Stop holding the phone the wrong way!
Steve Jobs allegedly emailed one customer today, saying, "Just avoid holding it in that way."
More formally, Apple sent Engadget the following statement:
"Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."
So, now that that's solved, when is Apple going to start giving out free "bumper" cases to iPhone 4 buyers?

LOL, maybe AT&T’s customer service would recommend removal of the pinky finger that is blocking the signal before they let people out of their contracts for the service.
“Doc, it hurts when I do this.”
“Don’t do this!”
I started waiting in line at 5:45 am. I am still in line at 7:32 pm waiting. Freeping via iPad.
My pay as you go Boost phone is way better..hold it anyway you want, you’ll get a reception. (snicker)
I am surprised ol Jobs did just say, “Hold your tongue just right.” He is so smart.
Or just forget all those Barbie toys and get a DROID.
Are you telling me this made it past the field tests? What field tests, you ask? Oh, we were too busy shipping the thing to do that.
I’ll just stick with my Tracphone. It went through the wash after I left it in my pocket and it still works.
I don’t have an iphone 4 yet, but I tested out how I would hold my iphone with a calculator I have and I don’t hold it in a deathgrip form, I hold it in a claw form. So maybe I won’t have this problem
Ha ha!
Per Steve Jobs,
Hold it like you’re gay,
‘n everything will be OK.
Haha — kind of like the old “Doctor, this hurts whenever I do this..” Doctor: “Then stop doing that.”
good, beat me to it.
Os4 wasn't ready for prime time.
Where’s that picture of the Obummer holding the phone upside down?
I am no Steve Jobs or Apple fan but this so-called problem is absurd. But how do these idiots think cell phones work - with brain waves? If you cover up the antenna you will lose reception. So Jobs is correct - don’t cover up the antenna or buy a different cell phone. Duh.
iPhone 4 Antenna Big Improvement
It's not every day that a major OEM like Apple will highlight a new smartphone's antenna in a highly publicized unveiling. Of course, when your new smartphone is the iPhone 4, and both the previous models of your device (3G and 3G S) are infamous for their inability to maintain a call, it's probably prudent that you should say a little bit about what you're doing to remedy the problem. That's just what Steve Jobs did when he unveiled the iPhone 4 at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference this week.In its promotional materials for the new phone, Apple continually boasts that the iPhone 4 will "change the way we communicate forever." The company is probably referring to its new video calling feature, FaceTime. But what iPhone users around the globe hope they're referring to is something much less grandiose; most iPhone users just want to make and maintain a simple phone call. That alone would constitute a major change in the way iPhone users communicate.

Or just drop the apple / i-stuff and go with something that works.
